It is very rare and this video was shot over a decade ago but this is what a Highway robbery looks like in Mexico. It took place on the East Coast south of the border town of Matamoros. https://youtu.be/2eZMvS0uKK4?feature=shared What do you think the victims should have done? Here are my suggestions : 🚫 Do NOT Stop in Isolated Areas
If someone tries to get you to pull over on a remote highway, don't stop. Keep driving to a more populated or well-lit area — a gas station, toll booth (cuota), military checkpoint, or OXXO convenience store. Even a small village is better than being alone.
🚗 Stay Calm and Keep Moving if Safe to Do So
If you suspect a robbery and you’re not being blocked physically, keep moving at a safe but steady speed. Don’t panic or swerve. If you're in motion, you're harder to target.
🔁 Do Not Turn Off the Main Highway
Many roadside ambushes happen on side roads or detours. Stick to cuota roads (toll highways) whenever possible — they are safer, patrolled, and more predictable.
🚨 If You're Blocked Completely and Can't Escape:
If they have guns and block your path, it's not worth your life to resist. Hand over valuables. Robbers in these situations usually just want money or gear and will leave once they get it. Don't argue, don't make sudden moves, and avoid eye contact unless addressed directly.
📱 Have a Dash Cam Running
Even if it's not a deterrent, it can help later. Position one toward the road, and in known risk zones, reposition it toward the driver’s window. Keep your phone out of sight but recording audio if possible.
📍 Tell Someone Your Route and ETA
Before any long drive, let someone know:
your route
expected arrival time
vehicle details
Use Google Maps location sharing or WhatsApp live location if possible.
✅ Use Your Instincts
If something feels wrong — like a "broke down" vehicle waving you down — trust your gut. Don’t stop. Drive on and report it later if safe.
🔧 Fake Mechanical Trouble (Only in Traffic)
If you're already in traffic or near a populated area and someone dangerous approaches, and you need to stall for time, pretend your car is having trouble — hazards on, hood up — to create delay or draw attention.
Extra Tips:
Drive during daylight only, especially in rural states with known highway risks.
Avoid traveling alone, if possible.
Keep valuables out of sight — no bags on seats, phones on dashboards, etc.
Be cautious of unmarked vehicles trying to pull you over — real police and military in Mexico are in uniformed and marked vehicles.
