WHY ARE WE NOT CREATING ENOUGH EXPORTERS?

Malawi needs more businesses that can move beyond the domestic market, compete regionally and internationally, and generate foreign exchange. But creating exporters requires more than encouraging businesses to sell abroad. It requires the right financing, preparation and support to help viable businesses become investment-ready and scale.

What would it take to create more exporters in Malawi and where can development finance play a role?

If you're considering financing for your business or project, start with this checklist:
-Be a registered entity in Malawi
-Operate in one of EDFโ€™s focus areas: Agriculture & Agro-Processing, Mining, Tourism, Export Manufacturing or Infrastructure.
-Demonstrate an ownerโ€™s contribution of at least 20%
-Provide acceptable collateral

Other requirements may apply depending on the type of financing and your project.

If you meet these general requirements, the next step is to start the conversation with EDF.

Don't plan for only the good season.

Before taking on financing, ask:
What happens to my business if costs rise, export prices fall or production is lower than expected?

Test your cash flow against a few difficult scenarios. Can your business still meet its financial obligations?

Plan for the pressure, not just the potential.

Can financing the farmer alone unlock the full potential of agriculture?

Agricultural transformation depends on more than production. It requires strong connections between farmers, inputs, finance, processing, markets and buyers.

Our latest blog looks at the role of value-chain finance in bridging these connections and what this could mean for Malawi's agricultural sector.

Sometimes, the challenge isn't the opportunity. It's having the right backing to access the financing you need.

You may have a viable business or project, but accessing financing can be difficult when you do not have adequate collateral to meet a lender's requirements.

For many businesses and project owners, this can mean putting growth plans on hold, not because the business or project lacks potential, but because collateral requirements stand in the way.

That does not always have to be the end of the journey.

EDF's guarantee support can help address this barrier by providing lenders with additional assurance to finance eligible businesses and projects.

Talk to us about unlocking financing through structured guarantees:

Having a good business idea is one thing. Turning it into a project that financiers are ready to support is another.

Sometimes, a project needs more work before it can move forward, from understanding whether the idea is commercially viable and financially sound, to assessing whether it can deliver the expected results, as well as putting together the information needed to support a financing application.

That preparation can make all the difference when the time comes to seek financing.

EDF provides project preparation services including feasibility studies, technical assessments, financial planning and other preparations needed to strengthen a project's readiness for investment.

Have a project in mind? Talk to us about preparing it for the next stage.
