Closing the Agricultural Finance Gap in Malawi for Sustainable Growth
The GIZ global program “Promotion of Agricultural Finance for Agri-based Enterprises in Rural Areas” (GP AgFin) in Malawi has successfully wrapped up the Farmer's Financial Cycle (FFC) Training of Trainers. The training was led by Master Trainers engaged from Zambia, through the long-standing collaboration with the GIZ GP AgFin Zambia.
By bringing farmers, agri-businesses, and partner financial institutions together, our GIZ GP AgFin Project in Malawi serves as a bridge with the main goal of sustainably and impactfully enhancing access to finance for smallholder farmers and MSMEs in Malawi. 👨🏾🌾🌱👩🏾🌾
During the five-day training, conducted in January 2024 at Bingu International Conference Center in Lilongwe, the contracted Master Trainers from Zambia shared valuable insights with nominated representatives from partner financial institutions, including MicroLoan Foundation, CUMO Microfinance, Comsiv Limited, NBS Bank, Malawi Union Of Savings and Credit Cooperatives, through Fincoop Savings and Credit Cooperative, Mchinji SACCO, Tipindule SACCO, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture’s Department of Fisheries and the Bankers Association of Malawi.
The GIZ GP AgFin project in Malawi aims to empower partner financial institutions and (semi-) state organizations to conduct financial literacy training for farmers, enhancing their personal and farm management skills for improved livelihoods. Topics covered include savings, loans, agriculture insurance, investment, and digital financial management. 📈💼
All the sessions were designed to be interactive and participant-centered. They were complemented by pilot trainings for the trainees to practice the tools and delivery of theoretical concepts gained, thus ensuring their effective learning and engagement. Thanks to the active participation and support from Zambian Master Trainers, 22 certified FFC trainers are now equipped to train and uplift the agricultural community.
In preparation for the next agricultural season, the certified trainers will impart valuable financial literacy skills to smallholder farmers through FFC from April to June 2024. Additionally, they will support the farmers in establishing linkages with financial institutions, enabling them to access vital agricultural finance resources. The success of the GP AgFin project in Malawi relies on our collaborative efforts, emphasizing the crucial step of working closely with partners to ensure sustainable impact. 🌟🌾💪
GP AgFin is financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
