From the Archives | Refinitiv's Maldives Islamic Finance Report 2018
In an exclusive contribution to Refinitiv's Maldives Islamic Finance Report 2018, Ibrahim Didi shared his perspective on the future of the Maldives' Islamic finance industry.
Didi noted that strong domestic demand for Shariah-compliant financial products, increasing interest from businesses and investors, and the government's vision to develop the Maldives as the Islamic finance hub of South Asia provide a strong foundation for long-term growth.
While Islamic banking is expected to continue its steady expansion, he identified Islamic fund management as the sector with the greatest growth potential. He highlighted that initiatives such as a Waqf Fund and an Islamic Sovereign Wealth Fund, supported by international best practices, could position the Maldives as a regional Islamic fund management centre serving millions of Muslims across South Asia.
Published in 2018, these insights outlined a long-term vision for the development of the Maldives' Islamic finance ecosystem and its aspiration to become a leading regional centre for Shariah-compliant financial services.
