Gold prices extended their record-high run into Asian trade on Wednesday as persistent optimism over lower U.S. interest rates weighed on the dollar, with more cues on the U.S. economy due in the coming days.

Broader metal prices were buoyed by recent declines in the dollar, which sank to a 14-month low after the Federal Reserve cut interest rates last week. The central bank also announced the start of an easing cycle that is expected to see rates fall further in the coming months.

Spot gold rose 0.3% to a record high of $2,670.52 an ounce, while gold futures expiring in December hit a peak of $2,694.75 an ounce.

Nvidia shares fell another 6.7% on Monday, extending losses for a third straight session and erasing more than $430 billion in market capitalization over the three-day slide.

The California-based AI chipmaker ended last week with a market valuation of around $3.1 trillion, lower than Apple’s $3.2 trillion and Microsoft’s $3.3 trillion. The group briefly overtook Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) last week to become the most valuable company in the world.

Despite the recent slide, Nvidia shares have surged by 138% year-to-date, making it one of the best-performing stocks on the Nasdaq 100 index.

Analysts have suggested that the downside move has more to do with sector rotation and profit-taking than fundamental issues at the business.

On Monday, analysts at Jefferies raised their price target to $150 per share from $135 while reiterating a Buy rating, arguing that "Nvidia remains both king and kingmaker" in the AI sector.

London's FTSE opened slightly lower on Friday after a hot reading of British retail sales data as the benchmark FTSE 100 edged 0.1% lower by 7:10 GMT.

British retail sales volumes rose by 2.9% in May, rebounding sharply from a revised 1.8% decline in April. Economists' poll had forecast sales volumes would increase by 1.5%.

The data highlighted the resilience of the British consumer, prompting traders to remain on the sidelines and await the purchasing managers' index (PMI) figures due later today.

However, investor sentiment in Britain is gradually brightening after comments from the Bank of England on Thursday brought an August rate cut into play. Markets are pricing in a 50-50 chance for an August cut.
