💧 Water Management in : A Critical Climate Challenge

Access to safe, reliable water remains one of Africa’s most urgent climate and development challenges. Recent data shows that approximately 300 million people lack access to safe drinking water, and 60% of the population resides in areas experiencing high to extremely high water stress.

Water scarcity affects health, livelihoods, food security, and resilience to climate shocks. Yet traditional systems often fail to reach the communities and sectors that need most, limiting the impact of water-related innovations.

ShEquity supports and innovators delivering climate-smart water solutions from smart irrigation and water-efficient agriculture to community water infrastructure and resource management technologies. By combining , technical advisory services, and ecosystem support, these enterprises can scale practical, sustainable, and climate-resilient solutions.

Water management is not just a technical challenge; it’s a opportunity for building resilient economies and communities across Africa.

📊 Rethinking KPIs in

Representation is a starting point, not the outcome.

In many investment frameworks, gender focus on participation metrics. While important, they rarely capture what truly determines long-term : who holds influence, who captures value, and who builds resilience within enterprises and value chains.

Robust gender-smart measurement should examine
🔹 Control over and strategic decision-making
🔹 Distribution of economic gains from
🔹 Risk exposure and adaptive capacity in times of stress

For @shequityafrica , effective KPIs go beyond inclusion and focus on outcomes that reshape systems. When power, value, and are not measured, meaningful impact remains out of reach.

Measurement shapes behaviour. Behaviour shapes capital allocation. The question is not whether we measure gender, but whether we measure what truly matters.

Why Impact Measurement Often Fails

Impact doesn’t fail because people don’t care. It fails because we measure what’s easy, not what’s meaningful.

Too often, gender and climate are reduced to checklists, reporting templates, and end-of-year summaries. The data may look good on paper, but it rarely shapes real decisions. It doesn’t influence who gets funded, on what terms, or at what scale.

's perspective is clear: If impact data doesn’t change allocation, it is not impact; it’s optics. True accountability begins when impact measurement is fully embedded within investment , incentives, and decision-making processes, and when gender and climate outcomes are treated as core performance indicators rather than peripheral considerations.

Impact should do more than tell a compelling story; it should shape how capital flows and drive more intentional, responsible decisions.

Ghana is rapidly emerging as a leader in the development of the global carbon market, yet many local remain on the sidelines.

Recently in , we convened the 15 climate-focused SMEs shortlisted for the second phase of our “Unlocking Carbon Credit Opportunities for Gender-Smart Green SMEs” project. The gathering included participation in the Ghana Impact Summit, a full day of interactive workshops on carbon markets, job creation, operations, and group coaching sessions. Our goal is to equip these SMEs with the tools, knowledge, and frameworks they need to participate in carbon markets and unlock climate finance actively. Thanks, Ghana Impact Summit, for the warm welcome.

As our Founder & CEO, Pauline Koelbl, highlighted: “Ghana is a leader in setting up and operationalizing carbon market frameworks, yet many SMEs remain disconnected from this opportunity.”

The opportunity is clear:
• Strong national climate frameworks aligned with National Determined Contributions (NDCs) and Article 6 of the Paris Agreement
• Growing demand for high-integrity carbon credits
• Increasing interest in high integrity climate-aligned businesses

What’s missing is access, awareness, and the right systems for the local . Through our Technical Assistance Facility, we are supporting local gender-smart, climate-focused SMEs to move from potential to participation, guiding them through tailored activities focusing on carbon market readiness, certification pathways, and investor engagement.

The program includes understanding how to engage with leading standards such as Verra, Gold Standard, and I-REC, and hands-on support to help businesses translate their operations into credible, investable climate . Ghana's transition to a low-carbon economy is not just an environmental imperative; it is a commercial opportunity for Ghanaian businesses ready to lead.

ShEquity’s POV: Women-Led Climate Innovation is Non-Negotiable

Africa’s climate future will be won or lost on the strength of innovation, and women are leading some of the most practical, scalable, and resilient solutions across energy, agriculture, water, and technology.

At , we’re clear: investing in gender-smart climate enterprises is not optional; it’s central to building a just, , and effective green economy. Ignoring this is not only inequitable; it’s a missed opportunity to deliver solutions that actually work for people, communities, and the planet.

We believe in pairing capital with technical support, advisory services, and access to ensure that women innovators/entrepreneurs don’t just participate but lead Africa’s transition to a green economy.

This is our point of view. Bold. Uncompromising. Necessary.
