A proud moment for Gozo and Malta!

Victoria has been recommended as European Capital of Culture for 2031, putting Gozo’s distinctive culture, traditions and creativity firmly on the European stage.

But what does being a European Capital of Culture actually mean?

Established by the European Union in 1985, the initiative gives selected cities the opportunity to showcase their cultural identity through a year-long programme of events, projects and activities, while strengthening connections with communities and cultures across Europe.

The title is not simply awarded for a city’s existing cultural heritage. Candidate cities are assessed by an independent panel of experts against criteria including their long-term cultural strategy, European dimension, cultural and artistic programme, ability to deliver, community participation and management.

Victoria’s successful bid was developed around the theme “An Island of Islands”, exploring connections between people, communities, places and Europe.

Victoria will become the second Maltese city to hold the title, following Valletta in 2018 — an exciting opportunity to showcase Gozo and Malta to audiences across Europe.

Malta Independence Day

On 21 September, Malta commemorates gaining independence from the United Kingdom in 1964, bringing an end to more than 160 years of British colonial rule.

The occasion marked Malta’s emergence as a sovereign nation, with the country taking responsibility for its own government and future while remaining a member of the Commonwealth. It continues to be recognised as one of the most significant milestones in Malta’s modern history.

To mark this national public holiday, the Vertex Alliance offices will be closed on Monday, 21 September 2026. We will reopen as usual on Tuesday, 22 September.
