European Tourism Recovery Continues Into 2024

Europe’s tourism industry is experiencing a robust recovery in the first months of 2024. The recovery is largely driven by strong intra-regional travel fuelled by Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands. Consumer travel spending is set to rise notably across Europe, hitting record numbers in the coming months.

This boost will support the travel and tourism businesses heavily impacted by the pandemic years and ongoing economic instability. Still, high prices and geopolitical risks remain key hurdles for tourism, as the sector as a whole also strives to adopt more responsible practices to benefit the locals and preserve the environment.

Countries in the Baltic region continue to lag behind due to challenges caused by the war in Ukraine, with Latvia registering the lowest post-pandemic international arrivals (-34%), followed by Estonia (-15%) and Lithuania (-14%). Despite challenges, consumer demand remains strong.

Inflationary pressures and geopolitical uncertainties remain significant concerns for the European tourism industry. The war in Ukraine continues to impact tourism flows, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe.

This summer will bring two major sporting events to Europe: the Olympic Games in France and the UEFA European Football Championship in Germany. The Olympics are expected to attract a surge in domestic and international tourists, with the impacts extending beyond the city of Paris itself.

Inflation is the word on everyone’s lips right now and with good reason. No matter what industry you’re in the record level of inflation is having a big effect on day-to-day business. The hotel industry is no exception. Inflation and particularly rising energy costs are having a substantial impact on the hotel rate landscape.
After consumers flush with savings built up during the pandemic, the travel industry was anticipating a robust season. Consumers were so eager to get out of the house that little could deter them, the thinking went.
But that was before a new risk emerged: stubborn, elevated inflation. It all has left travel industry executives wary. However, it is worth understanding how high inflation is hitting each travel and tourism segment individually, since the sector comprises a wide range of goods and services.
It is also worth noting that labour costs have risen hugely for hoteliers as economies have reopened. There are now more job vacancies than people out there to fill them, meaning hoteliers are having to offer higher wages. Once again increasing their costs.
How hotel industry will fare in the future?
Traditionally, consumers often forgo travel when faced with a high cost of living, however, at the moment along with consumer savings over the pandemic and delayed trips, is offsetting this. Overnight stays are recovering to pre-pandemic levels. For the time being.

Since the world around us continues to change and develop, it is important to move along with the progress. From year to year, attention is growing among such problems of a mass scale as global warming and excessive emissions. All this threatens not just the quality of our life, but also the lives of future generations, which is why it is important to remember how fragile our planet is, and it is our responsibility to take good care of it. Analysing the current situation, we have decided to change the direction of our company and from now on, we will focus on green energy and zero emissions. Each of our new undertakings will be aimed at protecting our planet. Our team is looking forward to a new future, where the next generation does not live of fear of cataclysm and natural disasters, but instead can enjoy the beauty of our planet Earth.
