Last week EIB has announced their initiative to co-invest 150M EUR into promising AI startups across EU and EU-related regions. This means that EIF now joins the AI race, where the USA and China are clear dominants at the moment.

The saying that data is the new gold is so old that nobody takes it seriously anymore. At the same time, the playfield has never been equal for everyone. China has identified it as a priority vector a while ago and started various government supported programs to develop the nations AI ecosystem. Now they are challenged only by the USA.

Now EU is finally getting into the game with the 150M EUR initiative. Of course, this is not anywhere near the numbers in China nor in the U.S., but it is a good start for sure.

The went into full effect in September 2019, when all the retail banking players had to open their APIs. Many companies have utilized this opportunity to challenge the status quo, but not many have succeeded yet. Nordigen is one of those, which has succeeded so far. Now the team is exploring the freemium model for their service. Link in the comment.

Is the finally getting a big chunk of innovation itself?

Short answer - absolutely! The structure of deals hasn't changed basically since the times of the whale hunters when the 20% or as much as the crew can actually carry was taken from the prey. Rolling funds are about to open the closed doors of the VC world to anyone!
