The Central Bank of Lesotho(CBL), in partnership with the National University of Lesotho (NUL), today officially launched the Certificate in Personal Finance Management Programme.

This collaborative initiative brings together the Bank, Academia, and Industry to address the growing challenge of high levels of over-indebtedness among salaried employees in Lesotho.

In his opening remarks, the Governor of CBL Dr. Letete highlighted that one of the key drivers of over-indebtedness is low levels of financial literacy, coupled with personal attitudes and behaviours towards money management. He noted that the Certificate in Personal Finance Management was developed to empower Basotho with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed financial decisions.

The Governor further emphasized that the programme will equip graduates with essential competencies, including financial literacy and ethical decision-making, and forms part of the Central Bank's broader efforts to promote financial literacy and financial inclusion across the country.

The Certificate programme, which will now be offered by the National University of Lesotho, aims to provide young people with financial education at an early stage while strengthening the University's academic offerings in personal finance.

As part of the launch, the Central Bank also donated finance-related books to the University to support students who will enrol in the programme.

In his closing remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the National University of Lesotho, Professor Fajana, expressed gratitude to the Central Bank for partnering with the University to collectively address the socio-economic challenges facing the nation. He described the initiative as a significant step towards building a financially informed and empowered society.
