කොළඹ පාරිභෝගික මිල දර්ශකය (කො.පා.මි.ද.) මත පදනම් වූ මතුපිට උද්ධමනය, ඉලක්කගත මට්ටමට වඩා සුළු වශයෙන් ඉහළින් පවතිමින්, 2026 මැයි මාසයේ දී සියයට 5.5ක් ලෙස වාර්තා විය. ආහාර උද්ධමනය සහ ආහාර නොවන උද්ධමනය පිළිවෙලින් සියයට 0.9ක් සහ සියයට 7.8ක් ලෙස වාර්තා විය.

கொழும்பு நுகர்வோர் விலைச் சுட்டெண்ணை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்ட முதன்மைப் பணவீக்கமானது 2026 மேயில் 5.5 சதவீதத்தினைப் பதிவுசெய்து, இலக்கிற்கு மேல் சிறிதளவு காணப்பட்டது. உணவு மற்றும் உணவல்லாப் பணவீக்கம் முறையே 0.9 சதவீதத்தையும் 7.8 சதவீதத்தையும் பதிவுசெய்தது.

CCPI based headline inflation remained marginally above the target, recording 5.5% in May 2026. Food and Non-food inflation recorded 0.9% and 7.8%, respectively.

🌍 𝐒𝐫𝐢 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐚'𝐬 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 – 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔

The impact of the war in the Middle East was reflected in the performance of the external sector in April 2026 as well.

📦 The 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭 widened to 𝐔𝐒$ 𝟑.𝟕 𝐛𝐧 during January–April 2026, compared to US$ 2.3 bn in the same period last year.

⛽ 𝐅𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬 rose sharply by 149.9% (y-o-y) in April 2026 due to higher global fuel prices and increased import volumes.

🚗 Spending on 𝐯𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 reached 𝐔𝐒$ 𝟐𝟎𝟖 𝐦𝐧 in April 2026, bringing total spending for the first four months of the year to 𝐔𝐒$ 𝟖𝟐𝟏 𝐦𝐧.

🏝️ 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 slowed further in April, with tourist arrivals declining. Tourist earnings were estimated at 𝐔𝐒$ 𝟏𝟓𝟕 𝐦𝐧 for the month.

💸 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬’ 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 remained strong at 𝐔𝐒$ 𝟕𝟔𝟖 𝐦𝐧 in April 2026.

📈 Foreign investments in government securities recorded a marginal net inflow, while the stock market saw a net outflow in April 2026.

💰 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬 stood at 𝐔𝐒$ 𝟔.𝟖 𝐛𝐧 at end April 2026.

💱 The Sri Lankan Rupee depreciated by 5.4% against the US dollar by end May 2026 amid increased external sector pressures.

🤝 The International Monetary Fund Executive Board completed the combined Fifth and Sixth Reviews under Sri Lanka’s EFF programme on 27 May 2026, allowing immediate access to around 𝐔𝐒$ 𝟔𝟗𝟓 𝐦𝐧 to support ongoing economic reforms.

📊 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬' 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐱 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 — 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔

📍Sri Lanka’s 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐌𝐈 slowed to 45.7 in April 2026, mainly due to the seasonal slowdown during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year period.

📍Construction firms also faced challenges from rising raw material costs and shortages of petrochemical-based materials linked to tensions in the Middle East.

📍Despite this, 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐎𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 continued to grow, supported by ongoing projects such as road rehabilitation activities. However, some firms noted that rising raw material costs could delay certain new projects due to ongoing price renegotiations.

📍𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 in the sector also increased as firms continued hiring, although skilled labour shortages remain a concern.

📍Meanwhile, 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬 declined in line with lower activity levels, while 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 continued to lengthen.

🔼Looking ahead, the short-term outlook for the construction sector remains positive with a steady pipeline of projects, though global uncertainties continue to pose risks.
