"Foreign Home Ownership / Local Elections / Increase in F-4 Visas"
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of the Korean government has released the 'Statistics on Foreign Land/Housing Ownership.' The number of houses owned by foreigners is 100,216, which accounts for 0.55% of all houses (19.65 million). By nationality, the breakdown is China (57%), the United States (21%), Canada (6%), followed by Taiwan and Vietnam.
It is currently local election season. Early voting is from May 29 to 30, and the main voting day is June 3, which is a legal holiday. Since 20 years ago, foreigners can vote if they meet the conditions of being 18 years or older, having held permanent residence status (F-5) for over 3 years, and being registered as foreigners. The eligible population is about 150,000.
After the implementation of the unified measures for overseas Koreans' residency status earlier this year, more than 36,000 people have obtained overseas Korean (F-4) visas. The Ministry of Justice has decided to newly add 14 Overseas Korean Support Centers nationwide, increasing the total to 37, and also to provide budget support.
