Cambodia’s housing market is on a roll.

A thriving job market as a result of the booming economy has boosted demand for housing. This has pushed rental yields to 8 to 10 per cent, and asset appreciation to 15 per cent per year, making the Southeast Asian nation’s property sector an ideal bet for Chinese investors seeking overseas assets as a hedge against yuan devaluation, say market observers.

The country’s gross domestic product grew 7.5 per cent and exports surged 17.6 per cent last year, thanks to massive inflow of Chinese investment in infrastructure projects on the back of the Belt and Road Initiative, and factories relocating from the mainland to take advantage of the cheap labour and dodge punitive tariffs imposed by Washington in the ongoing US-China trade war.

Demand for housing pushes rental yield in Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh to 8 to 10 per cent.

Cambodia and France anticipate a growth in the number of tourists travelling between the countries after a delegation from French travel agency Atout France visited the Kingdom on Tuesday and Wednesday, Cambodia Association of Travel Agents president Chhay Sivlin told The Post.

Atout France, a government institution which works in partnership with public and private organisations in France to promote the country as a tourism destination, paid its first-ever visit to Cambodia this week.

Sivlin told The Post on Wednesday that Atout France’s visit was very important for tourism development in Cambodia as it presents an opportunity for the Kingdom to be widely promoted as a holiday destination in France.

Minister of Labour and Vocational Training Ith Sam Heng has asked international development partners, especially the International Labour Organisation (ILO), to continue assisting the Kingdom’s labour sector as a response to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

He emphasised that Cambodia’s 50-year membership of the ILO had made great achievements through collaboration on numerous schemes.

Sam Heng made the request at the 108th session of the International Labour Conference, which was held under the theme Jobs for a Bright Future in Geneva, Switzerland, last week.

The expansion of e-commerce has the potential to propel Cambodia’s economic growth in both obvious and subtle ways. One might look to Vietnam, its neighbour – its e-commerce growth rate ranking second in Southeast Asia, with an annual growth of 87 per cent, worth $2.8 billion – for an example of what is achievable in the region.

Yet in Cambodia, e-commerce remains limited even with the recent rise of small-scale entrepreneurs. Though it is important to acknowledge the progress that has been made, it is also crucial that we think more about the hurdles that stand in the way of prosperity.

Issues that stem from a lack of digital literacy, familiarity with certain technologies, infrastructure, and a legal framework stand in the way of growth in Cambodia’s e-commerce sector, Chanvoitey Horn writes.
