The agro-processing industry in Cambodia is underdeveloped, with only about 10 percent of the country’s agricultural goods being processed since 1998. Food, beverage, and to***co processing, which represents 45 percent or about 30,000 of the total manufacturing enterprises in Cambodia, consists of a large number of micro, unregistered businesses, and a lack of industrial diversity. One major constraint for food- and agro-processing companies (processors) is the lack of market information, and a system that enables more and effective information sharing to entrepreneurs to better access the inputs markets. In other words, local processors are challenged by a lack of relevant information, knowledge, skill and process around food technology, complying with policies and regulations, and managing business, staff, and finance because of availability and access issues. The consequence of this information gap is exacerbated for women entrepreneurs who are generally more disadvantaged due to their lack of time, lower confidence, weaker networks, and gender-stereotypes around skills and professions.
Exhibitions are one of the most common sources of market information for local processors. Most exhibitions in Cambodia, however, are designed to link processing enterprises to the agricultural outputs market, or end consumers. With the exception of large trade fairs such as CAMFOOD or the Rice Forum which target international and large local companies, there are no exhibitions designed to link local small and micro-enterprises to the inputs markets. Providing a forum for small and micro- enterprises to access information on the inputs market and establish business-to-business linkages could unleash their productivity and competitiveness. To bridge this information gap in the inputs market and support local small and micro-processors, especially women processors, a series of three Food- and Agro-Processing Business Matching Forums will be organised in Battambang, Kampong Cham, and Phnom Penh. The Forums are organised by the Federation of Associations for SMEs of Cambodia (FASMEC), the Young Entrepreneurs Association of Cambodia (YEAC), and the Cambodia Agricultural Value Chain Program (CAVAC).
2. Objectives
The Forums intends specifically to provide an opportunity for:
· Local food- and agro-processors, especially women-led, small and micro-processors to have better knowledge and access to important support products and services to improve their productivity and competitiveness
· Suppliers of agro-processing input products and services to have wider market outreach, better understanding of the demands of local processors, and recent market trends and opportunities in the food- and agro-processing sector
· A comprehensive list of food- and agro-processing enterprises and their support providers to be produced, allowing for future information sharing, and networking
· Formal and informal networks of women in business to be expanded
· Networks business associations to be expanded to processors in the province
3. Overview
The Forums will exhibit a comprehensive number of inputs (products and services) available in the market to support food- and agro-processors to improve their operations, particularly productivity and competitiveness of their businesses. These support products and services include, but are not limited to, the following areas:
Business registration and licensing
