Washington: The United States government has agreed to invest about $2 billion across nine quantum-computing companies, including IBM, as part of a broader effort to strengthen domestic technology capacity and compete in strategically important sectors, according to Reuters.
Under the plan, IBM is set to receive about $1 billion to establish a new company named Anderon in New Albany, New York. The facility is expected to become the first dedicated quantum-chip manufacturing site in the United States. GlobalFoundries will receive $375 million to build a domestic factory capable of producing components for different types of quantum-computing systems.
Other companies, including D-Wave, Rigetti Computing and Infleqtion, are expected to receive about $100 million each, while Diraq may receive up to $38 million to address key technical challenges that continue to limit the development of more powerful quantum computers.

Israeli authorities have deported 37 French nationals who took part in a Gaza-bound aid flotilla to Türkiye, according to France’s Foreign Ministry. The confirmation was made by ministry spokesperson Pascal Confavreux on Thursday, May 21, 2026.

HELSINKI, Finland — According to Reuters, Finland’s extensive network of large, dual-use bomb shelters is drawing growing international attention as governments seek stronger civil-defense systems amid heightened global security concerns.
In Helsinki, the Merihaka civil shelter has become one of the most visible examples of Finland’s preparedness model. Located about 25 meters underground, the facility can accommodate around 6,000 people and is used in normal times as a public sports and recreation complex, with sports areas, a gym and a children’s playground. Hong Kong police are investigating a reported burglary at a seaside residence in Pak Shek Kok, Tai Po, after a collection of premium wines, Mao-tai liquor and vintage tea leaves worth an estimated HK$8 million was stolen from the property.
According to local reports, the case came to light at around 5:47 p.m. on May 20, 2026, when a 53-year-old businesswoman surnamed Chiu returned to her villa at Mayfair By The Sea on Fo Chun Road and found that the rear door had been forced open. The interior of the home showed signs of being ransacked, prompting her to contact police.
Officers who arrived at the scene conducted a preliminary investigation and confirmed that valuable alcoholic beverages and tea leaves were missing. The stolen items reportedly included fine wines, bottles of Mao-tai liquor and vintage tea leaves.
