BUILDING A MULTI-MILLION KENYA SHILLING DAIRY ENTERPRISE

Dairy farming remains one of the most profitable agribusiness ventures in Kenya when professionally managed. The key to success lies in controlling production costs, maximizing milk output, and building a sustainable breeding program that increases herd value over time.

With proper feeding systems, quality housing, good genetics, and professional management, a dairy enterprise can generate strong monthly cash flow while creating long-term wealth through herd expansion and heifer sales.

1. FEED MANAGEMENT & COST CONTROL

A mature dairy cow weighing approximately 500kgs requires about 3% of its live weight as Dry Matter (DM) daily.
Daily Dry Matter Requirement
500kg × 3%
= 15kg DM per cow per day
Efficient feed planning is the foundation of profitable dairy farming.

2. SCENARIO ONE: MAIZE SILAGE + DAIRY MEAL SYSTEM

Under this system:
70% of the feed ration is maize silage
30% is dairy meal concentrate
Silage Feeding Calculation
Required DM from silage:
70% × 15kg
= 10.5kg DM
Maize silage contains approximately 40% DM:
10.5 ÷ 0.40
= 26.25kg silage daily

Assuming silage production cost:
Ksh 5 per kg
Daily silage cost:
26.25 × 5
= Ksh 131.25

Dairy Meal Feeding Calculation
Required DM from dairy meal:
30% × 15kg
= 4.5kg DM

Dairy meal contains approximately 90% DM:
4.5 ÷ 0.90
= 5kg dairy meal

Assuming high-yield dairy meal cost:
Ksh 35 per kg
Daily dairy meal cost:
5 × 35
= Ksh 175

TOTAL FEEDING COST PER COW
Silage = Ksh 131.25
Dairy meal = Ksh 175
Total:
Ksh 306 per cow per day

3. PROJECTED PERFORMANCE FOR A 60-COW DAIRY UNIT
Feeding Cost
60 cows × Ksh 306
= Ksh 18,360 daily
Monthly feeding cost:
18,360 × 30
= Ksh 550,800

4. MILK PRODUCTION & SALES
Assumptions:
70% of the herd remains in milk throughout the year
Average milk production = 25 litres per cow daily
Lactating Herd
60 × 70%
= 42 lactating cows

Daily Milk Production
42 × 25 litres
= 1,050 litres daily
Milk Revenue

Assuming milk selling price:
Ksh 50 per litre
Daily revenue:
1,050 × 50
= Ksh 52,500

Monthly revenue:
52,500 × 30
= Ksh 1,575,000

5. MONTHLY PROFITABILITY ANALYSIS
Monthly Revenue
Ksh 1,575,000
Less Feeding Cost
Ksh 550,800
Gross Margin
= Ksh 1,024,200

Operational Expenses
Farm management & labour = Ksh 60,000
Electricity & miscellaneous = Ksh 50,000
Total Operational Cost
= Ksh 110,000
NET MONTHLY PROFIT
Approximately Ksh 914,200

6. MODERN DAIRY INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT
Professional dairy farming requires high-quality infrastructure that prioritizes:
Cow comfort
Proper ventilation
Natural drainage
Ease of cleaning
Disease control
Efficient feeding and milking systems
Future expansion

COST OF DAIRY HOUSING
Cost Per Cow Space
Ksh 50,000
A complete 60-cow dairy unit will include:
Double milking parlour
Calf pens
Isolation/sick bay
Total Dairy Barn Cost
60 × 50,000
= Ksh 3,000,000

They should also put in place a facility to accommodate:
Storage of approximately 3,000 hay bales
Silage storage capacity of approximately 250 tons
The herd is projected to consume:
Approximately 1.6 tons of silage daily.

7. SCENARIO TWO: HAY + DAIRY MEAL SYSTEM
Both hay and dairy meal contain approximately 90% DM.
Hay Requirement
Required DM:
10.5kg
Actual hay required:
10.5 ÷ 0.90
= 11.7kg hay

Assuming:
Hay bale price = Ksh 300
Bale weight = 10kg
Equivalent hay cost:
Ksh 351 daily
Dairy Meal Cost
5kg × 35
= Ksh 175

TOTAL DAILY FEEDING COST USING HAY
Ksh 526 per cow per day
Compared to silage feeding:
Difference = Ksh 220 per cow daily
For a 60-cow herd:
220 × 60
= Ksh 13,200 extra daily
Monthly difference:
Approximately Ksh 396,000

This clearly demonstrates why silage preparation is essential for profitable commercial dairy farming.
8. HERD MULTIPLICATION & LONG-TERM WEALTH CREATION
A well-managed dairy project creates wealth not only through milk sales but also through herd growth.
Assuming:
80% calving success
Majority female calves retained as replacement stock
Herd Growth Projection.

Year 1
60 mature cows
48 heifers born

Year 2
60 mature cows
48 mature in-calf heifers
96 young heifers

Year 3
Approximately 108 lactating cows

Year 4
Approximately 198 mature cows
9. HEIFER SALES POTENTIAL

By Year 4:
Approximately 180 in-calf heifers available for sale
Selling price:
Ksh 100,000 – 150,000 per heifer
Potential Revenue
Ksh 18M – 27M.

This becomes an additional major income stream besides milk production.

10. PROJECTED ANNUAL RETURNS
Year 1
Milk revenue:
42 cows × 25 litres × 365 days
= 383,250 litres annually
At Ksh 50 per litre:

Operational cost:
11,000 × 60 × 12
= Ksh 7,920,000
NET YEAR 1 RETURN
Ksh 11,242,500

Year 2
Projected similar performance:
Ksh 11,242,500

Year 3
108 cows × 70%
= 76 lactating cows
Daily production:
76 × 25 litres
= 1,900 litres
Daily revenue:
1,900 × 50
= Ksh 95,000
Annual revenue:
Ksh 34,675,000
Operational cost:
11,000 × 108 × 12
= Ksh 14,256,000
NET YEAR 3 RETURN
Ksh 20,419,000

Goat Multiplication:
===============

How Fast Do Goats Multiply?

1️⃣ Maturity for Breeding:

Female goats (does) usually start breeding at 5–8 months of age.

Male goats (bucks) are ready for breeding at 6–9 months, depending on the breed.

Larger breeds may mature slightly later.

2️⃣ Breeding Frequency:

Goats generally breed during certain seasons, though some breeds can breed throughout the year.

Does can be bred once they reach 60–70% of their adult weight.

3️⃣ Gestation Period:

Average gestation is about 150 days (5 months).

After giving birth, does can be rebred a month or so later, depending on their health and care.

4️⃣ Litter Size:

Most goats give 1–3 kids per birth.

Some breeds, like Boer or Kalahari Red, often produce twins, occasionally triplets.

First-time does usually have a single kid.

5️⃣ Birth Frequency:

With good care, a doe can have 1–2 births per year.

Example:

First year → first birth → 1–2 kids

Second year → second birth → twins or triplets possible

6️⃣ Growth & Replacement:

Kids reach breeding maturity in 5–8 months (females).

Healthy young does can continue the herd growth cycle.

7️⃣ Herd Multiplication Example:

Start with 5 does and 1 buck:

First year → ~5–10 kids (depending on twins/triplets)

Second year → herd can double with proper care
Population grows faster with twins/triplets and year-round breeding.
