22nd March marks the World Water Day. This year, the focus of the UN observance is on accelerating change to solve the water and sanitation crisis. The dysfunction throughout the water cycle is undermining progress on all major global issues, from health to hunger, gender equality to jobs, education to industry, disasters to peace.

Rapid, transformative change is needed and everyone can play their part. Every action – no matter how small – will make a difference.

Mount Kenya Ewaso Water Partnership kicked off the implementation of the Water Governance Support Programme II that has been funded by Kenya Water and Sanitation Civil Society.
The project aims to help MKEWP bring together right holders and duty bearers to discuss challenges and possible solutions in the WASH/WRM sector within the Ewaso Nyiro Basin.
In yesterday's inception meeting, representatives from 15 WRUAs, 4 counties and 4 Civil Society Organizations were trained on data collection mechanisms that would help bring out key issues and challenges in WASH/WRM at the community levels with the intention of having these issues prioritized during the County Integrated Development Plans engagements.

WATER CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT IS COMPLEX: PARTNERSHIPS ARE KEY. HOW MKEWP (Mount Kenya Ewaso Water Partnership) WORKS

MKEWP has essential partnerships to make the model of water resources management work.
At our core is the partnership with the WRUA (the Water Resources User Group. These groups are the essence of community based natural resources management.
Each WRUA is to be led by a Board chosen locally. Each Board is expected to direct the activities of a management team – a manager, her executive team, and a group of scouts.
Each WRUA is comprised on average of 10 community water projects, individual points of water off-take directed by a Sub-catchment Management Plan, and serving a discrete collection of water users.
Each Sub-catchment management plan is approved and implemented through an MOU with the Water Resources Authority.
Each Plan and MOU is good for a period of 5 years.
Our next important partner is the Water Resources Authority
The WRA is our regulatory body appointed to control and regulate the water resource according to the law, and across county and administrative boundaries.
Five County Goverments (Nyandarua, Nyeri, Isiolo, Meru, and Laikipia) in the upper basin are a major stakeholder group, because they are responsible for working with NEMA on riparian health and water quality, and the Water and Sewerage Corporations who supply piped water to cities, towns, municipalities, and trading centers.
Conservancies, Ranches and Commercial Horticulture Farms are key partners because of their dependency on water resources and the dependability of water of flow and access.
Our Partnership also includes water service providers – businesses and consultant groups focused on water management services and equipment delivery.
We include a member of NGOs, research organizations (CETRAD and MPALA), and financial institutions supporting the water sector.
We include representative of Community Forest Associations, for they are key to the watershed protection.
We are governed by a Board comprised of 17 MKEWP Council Members drawn from these partnerships.
Our Council is served by a Technical Advisory Committee and a small MKEWP secretariat housed at the Laikipia Forum
MKEWP is only the second model of its kind in Kenya, where public, community, and private partnerships work in service to water resources management. The size, hydrology, and demands on this basin and Partnership are significantly different than its sister model (IMARISHA) of Lake Naivasha.
For MKEWP and its partners, it’s a start, and we still have a long way to go!!

NO HUMAN IS LIMITED: THE STORY OF ELIJAH GATIMU.
Every year during the dry season, Elijah and his wife would sit at home without much to do and unable to plant because, like most rural Kenyans, they needed rain to grow food for their family. Elijah’s family’s food availability for the entire year depended on one harvest grown during the rainy season on a small plot. The land size and rain dependency made them unable to grow enough food to last the entire year.

Successive years of drought and other production shocks in Kenya have reduced crop productivity and undermined livelihoods, leaving smallholder farmers like Elijah and his family increasingly food insecure and vulnerable, making recovery more difficult.

To help feed her family after their own food production ran out; Elijah’s wife would do casual labor, working in the fields of other farmers to earn 2 kg of maize meal per day. However, doing this hired labor left her with little time to do her household chores and tend to her fields. In years of severe drought, Elijah and his family were dependent on food aid distributions when their food stocks ran out.
“Now, casual labor is history!” Before, I was in dire poverty and stayed at home during the dry season. Now, we have food all-year round and do not depend on food aid. I can pay my children’s school fees for both my daughter who is in secondary, and my son in university.”

Last year, Elijah’s life changed with the arrival of Light for the World, a not for profit organization that supports people living with disabilities in the various counties of Kenya. Light for the World NGO identified Elijah as a promising farmer living with visual impairment and came through to finance him with a grant of Kes 80,000 to cater for dam liner purchase and transport costs. Regardless of Elijah not being a member of Emu Sacco, the Sacco supported him with free welding and free dam liner installation services while he and his family financed excavation costs for his water pan.

Through their support Elijah was supported to acquire a 500,000-liter water pan that is properly lined with 0.5mm gauge dam liner purchased and installed through Emu Sacco. Elijah can now irrigate crops during the dry season, allowing him to harvest up to three times a year. Since getting the water pan, Elijah grew a variety of crops under irrigation, including tomatoes, onions, cabbage and maize.

His wife also started a small kitchen garden where she grows kale and spinach, and supplies to shops at a trading center near them. This earns them daily up-keep money. After feeding his family, Elijah sold the surplus vegetables and maize in the market, making in three months what he had never made in his life. Elijah purchased a water pump to harness water from the pan to his farm for faster and more effective irrigation.

When asked about the future, Elijah is convinced that he will be at a better stage of his life in three years. He plans to expand his poultry and fruit farming business, and wants to supply eggs, chicken meat, and fruits to nearby centers and the Nanyuki market. The future is indeed bright for Elijah and his family.

Drip Irrigation is the most efficient water and nutrient delivery system for growing crops. It delivers water and nutrients directly to the plant’s root zone, in the right amounts, at the right time, so each plant gets exactly what it needs, when it needs it, to grow optimally. It enables farmers to produce higher yields while saving on water as well as fertilizers, energy.
How does it work?
Water and nutrients are delivered across the field in pipes called ‘dripelines’ featuring small units known as ‘drippers’. Each dripper emits drops containing water and fertilizer, resulting in the uniform application of water and nutrients direct to each plant's root zone, across an entire field.
Drip irrigation gives farmers an efficient and simple way to operate their farms. With drip irrigation, farmers are guaranteed;
• Higher consistency quality yields
• Huge water savings, no runoff, no evaporation, no waste
• 100% land utilization- drip irrigates uniformly in any topography and soil type.
• Energy saving- it works on low water pressure
• Efficient use of fertilizer and nutrients- no leaching
We have in stock dam liners 0.3mm, 15cm/20CM, 1000M & 0.4MM, 15CM,20/20CM,1000M.
We offer services of design and installation.

Broadly there are two ways of harvesting rainwater, namely; surface runoff harvesting and rooftop rainwater harvesting. Rainwater harvesting is the collection and storage of rain for reuse on-site, rather than allowing it to run off. The stored water is used for various purposes, such as gardening, irrigation, etc.

DRIP IRRIGATION.
Drip irrigation involves placing tubing with emitters on the ground along side the plants. The emitters slowly drip water into the soil at the root zone. Because moisture levels are kept at an optimal range, plant productivity and quality improve. In addition, drip irrigation:

1. Saves time, money, and water because the system is so efficient.
2. Decreases labor.
3. Increases effectiveness on uneven ground.
4. Reduces leaching of water and nutrients below the root zone.
5. Prevents disease by minimizing water contact with the leaves, stems, and fruit of plants.
6. Allows the rows between plants to remain dry, improving access and reducing w**d growth.

We offer services of design and drip irrigation installation.

LEAVING NO ONE BEHIND

Kenya’s second largest county, Marsabit County, has over 200,000 people bearing the brunt of an acute food and water shortage.

Dried up lagas and barren agricultural fields are now dominating Marsabit County. Women are forced to walk for several kilometers in search of water. The little agricultural land is covered in dust, with carcasses spread across the ground. Recent reports have indicated that about 2.8 million Kenyans are at the brink of starvation should climate change continue to bite hard. President Uhuru Kenyatta declared the current drought a national disaster. The situation in Marsabit continues to be monitored closely by government agencies like the National Drought Management Authority NDMA. Locals are asking for immediate help with water and food.

At the heart of the drought period, locals share the same water points with animals. The families also share the little food they have with their animals, in the hope to keep them alive. Many children have turned to be full-time herders. They are forced to travel many kilometers in search of pasture and water for their livestock. The majority are migrating even as far as the Ethiopian border. Women and children travel in the late evening to search for water; they sleep there to get water in the early morning before going back home.

Mitigation measures include distribution of food, supplementary feeding, a school feeding program, enhancement of integrated outreach programs in health facilities, and community sensitization on afforestation.

How Is IREMO (Indigenous Resource Management Organization) Assisting?

Indigenous Resource Management Organization (IREMO) is a registered nonprofit making organization that supports communities to secure their basic rights and services as right holders from duty bearers for their own development, initiate and manage their own resources.

The organization supports individuals or groups whose rights are infringed either as a result of traditional practices or by state. IREMO primary targets are the poor and disadvantaged community members (especially women and girls) who are supported through their own ideas and effort in order to uplift themselves from their current situation.

IREMO plans to support these marginalized women some living with disabilities and others FGM survivors who have had to live less dignified lives in the past. The NGO also wants to save women from the long-distance walk to fetch water by helping them acquire well lined water pans in their homes for easy access of livestock, and for household use which will translate to better childcare services.

Emu Sacco is working closely with IREMO to support 5 groups of vulnerable women to acquire good quality, long-lasting dam liners and shade-nets, welding and installation services for their water pans.
