How To Prepare For Your First Job After
College
You just landed your very first job;
congratulations! If you have just cleared
campus or looking to start your very first job,
knowing what to expect in the workplace can
be a real challenge. In an economy
characterized by the lucky few getting jobs,
consider yourself lucky and prepare thoroughly
for your new job.
It is understandable to feel a bit uneasy when
starting out your first job. It doesn’t matter
even if you previously had a few internships,
because the ideal workplace is somehow very
different. Below we have outlined the best
ways to prepare for your first job out of
college and how to maintain that professional
code.
How To Prepare For Your First Job After
College
1. First Impressions Counts A Lot
First impressions are critical as you begin your
time with a new employer. You need to be very
tactical about creating the optimal image, right
from the beginning of your tenure in that
company till the end.
Making a first good impression is one thing
you should be very concerned about; because
people are going to judge you based on that.
First and foremost, arrive at work earlier or on
time. This does not mean that you get there
before the cleaning team or when the guard
arrives, but set yourself some time and arrive
there about 15 minutes earlier.
When it comes to dressing, stick to
professionalism. Some companies may advise
you earlier in advance on their dressing code
but if this was not communicated to you, stick
to the conservative type of dressing. Your red
tights or the tight jeans are a bad choice for
someone who is looking to impress on the first
day at work. Instead, a knee length skirt of
neutral color and a neutral blouse with a
blazer can never go wrong.
While at the office, be extra professional even
if people are going to think you are too quiet.
Keep your phone in silent mode and try to to
keep off social media. No boss is going to take
you lightly when he finds you updating about
your first day of work on Instagram, Facebook
or Twitter.
Also, try to make a good impression by
meeting your expectations for the day because
that is why you were hired. Get yourself
organized and learn how to manage your time
efficiently.
2. Embrace Teamwork In All Aspects
Once you join the workplace, you will start to
realize that you are now part of the team. In
order to solve problems and get the job done,
you have to work together. Show loyalty to
fellow co workers and also embrace team
spirit. Establishing effective teamwork in the
workplace should be key to accomplishing and
task at hand. So make use of it fully.
Also as you interact with your colleagues, you
will discover that the workplace could have its
office politics. Whatever you do, keep yourself
away from it. You sure do not want a situation
whereby he said that or she said that when its
too late.
Showing how you can collaborate and work
with your colleagues in a professional manner
is very important. This will help you know
when and how to approach them in case you
need help with anything.
3. Never Stop Learning
Since this is your very first job, there are a lot
of things you can learn while on it
Furthermore, this sets the foundation for your
future career endeavours. Interact with your
colleagues,hold discussions with them,seek
their advise on various issues and learn as
much as possible in the first few weeks of your
job.
Take advantage of the budding relationship
with your colleagues and supervisors, and gain
as much work advise,information,ethics and
experience from them.
4. Go Above And Beyond The Job
Description
During the first days in your work, you will be
assigned lighter duties. Whenever you feel you
are ready to handle tougher responsibilities,
take the initiative to ask for more rather than
just sitting there and waiting for your next
assignment.
You surely want your new employer to notice
your hard work and even promote you. Go
further and ,distinguish yourself from the rest
of the team by taking initiative. Come up with
great ideas and implement them. Be the
person who always offers to help in the office,
and everyone will notice that!
