One tree at a time. One forest at a time. One future at a time.
The Old Mutual Foundation has begun a new chapter in its conservation journey with the launch of the Chepalungu Forest Rehabilitation Programme in Bomet County.
Together with local communities, conservation partners, and over 100 Old Mutual Employees from across the country, we planted 22,000 indigenous tree seedlings as part of our commitment to restore 100 hectares of this critical ecosystem.
Why Chepalungu?
This 4,871-hectare forest is a vital water catchment that feeds tributaries of the Mara and Sondu Rivers, supporting biodiversity, local livelihoods, and the wider Maasai Mara ecosystem. Years of degradation have placed this important landscape under pressure, making restoration both urgent and necessary.
Our journey to Chepalungu builds on the success of the Old Mutual Foundation's rehabilitation efforts in the Aberdares, where we successfully restored 60 hectares of degraded forestland. Having witnessed the positive environmental and community impact of that programme, we are now extending that commitment to another landscape where it can make a lasting difference.
But this is about more than trees.
It's about protecting water sources, strengthening climate resilience, supporting livelihoods, and creating a greener, healthier future for generations to come.
