Do not eat the children of your investment

It’s dividend season.
Most SACCOs are paying out, and you can see it on people’s faces — joy, relief, pride. That feeling of getting paid for being patient never gets old.

But here’s today’s Money Monday lesson, inspired by The Richest Man in Babylon:
“Do not eat the children of your investment.”
In simple terms
Dividends are not just money to spend.
They are seeds.

When you consume everything, you kill the future income that money could have produced. But when you reinvest your dividends, you allow compound interest to do its quiet, powerful work.
Plough back the earnings.

Grow the portfolio.
Let money create more money.
The goal is not just to receive dividends once a year.
The goal is to reach a point where your investments pay you more every year, without extra effort.

Short-term pleasure feels good.
Long-term growth feels better.
Think about this as you receive your dividends today.
Will you eat the children…
or raise them to work for you?

💵💴💰MONEY WEDNESDAY.
Yesterday I met Peter.
He’s a boda guy. Works hard. Leaves home at 5am. Gets back tired.
One day his bike broke down.
No work. No income.
Rent still due. Food still needed.
That’s when it hit him and it should hit us too
Depending on one income stream is risky for the common mwananchi.
You don’t need to be rich to have multiple income streams.
You need awareness, consistency and a mindset shift.
Here are 5 realistic income streams a common mwananchi in Kenya can build
Your main income
This could be a job, biashara, boda, salon, kiosk or farming.
This pays the bills. Respect it. Protect it. But don’t let it be the only plan.
Side hustle income
Think weekend baking, thrift clothes, online selling, photography, nail tech, farming on a small plot, tutoring.
One extra skill can change your financial story.
Digital income
Your phone is an asset.
Content creation, online writing, social media management, virtual assistance, affiliate marketing.
You don’t need thousands of followers. You need value and consistency.
Investment income
Chamas, MMFs, SACCOs, bonds, small stock investments.
You start small. Very small.
But money that works for you brings peace of mind.
Asset based income
Renting out a room, tools, a camera, a car, farming equipment or even land.
If you own it and it can earn, you are one idea away from extra income.
Peter now saves weekly in a chama, runs a small spare parts side hustle and posts bike content online.
Same Peter. Different mindset.
Multiple income streams are not about greed.
They are about stability, dignity and freedom.
Which one do you already have
Which one will you start this year
Let’s talk money like adults.
Share this with a mwananchi who needs to see it.
