Whenever a new LLM drops GPT, Grok, Llama we end up reverse-engineering the sheer scale of resources behind it.

Take Meta's open-source Llama 7B. That "B" stands for billion 7 billion parameters the model was trained on.

The AI race just got louder Fable 5, Grok 4.5, and GPT-5 all dropped this week. But Africa still doesn't have a single homegrown LLM. Why?
Derrick breaks down the real math: Meta's Llama 3 70B took roughly 180,000 A100 GPU-hours to train 54 days on a cluster of 25,000+ A100 chips, at about $35,000 per chip. That's not a talent gap, it's a capital gap.
Africa today has an estimated 5,000 H200 GPUs in active deployment, mostly in South Africa and North Africa. Kenya has fewer than 50.
You don't launch an airline before you build the airport. The continent's AI ambitions need compute infrastructure and financing first the experiments can follow.

Africa's collective AI push runs on roughly 10,000 GPUs. The United States alone commands an estimated 2.5 million+.
