5 Financial Stability Indicators for SACCOs in Kenya:

1. SASRA recommends SACCOs should maintain a Core Capital To Total Assets Ratio of at least 10%

This ratio shows how much of a SACCO’s assets are funded by its own capital(member shares and retained earnings) rather than borrowed money. This ensures financial stability, protects members' savings, and prevents over-reliance on debt.

2. SASRA recommends SACCOs to main a Core Capital to Total Deposits Ratio of at least 8%

This ratio measures a SACCO’s financial strength by comparing its core capital to the total deposits from members. This ensures the SACCO can absorb financial shocks, protect depositors, and remain stable.

3. The Maximum external borrowing to Total Assets allowed by SASRA is only 25%

SASRA limits a SACCO’s external borrowing to a maximum of 25% of its total assets. This prevents SACCOs from relying too much on debt from external lenders like banks, ensuring they remain financially stable and can meet their obligations to members.

4. SASRA recommends that the Institutional Capital to Total Assets Ratio be at least 8%

This measures the financial strength of a SACCO by comparing its long-term reserves (such as retained earnings and other accumulated funds) to its total assets. This ensures the SACCO has enough internal funds to support growth, absorb financial shocks, and remain sustainable

5. Non Performing Loans Ratio

A nonperforming loan (NPL) is a loan that is in default due to the fact that the borrower has not made the scheduled payments for a specified period. SASRA has no prescribed industry standard for NPLs in the SACCO industry, but a high NPL compared to peers can be a source of concern for SACCO members and stakeholders.

We accept any document/applications in softcopy as long as it is legible, clear and of good quality. It is recommended you scan your document in PDF File format using your phone's *Camscanner App* (Available on *Google Playstore*). Alternatively you can scan the document in a cybercafe and send through WhatsApp or email. Photos are *NOT ALLOWED* because of their poor quality and are not legible when printed. Alternatively, you can always arrange with a supervisor/rider to deliver the hardcopy to the Sacco office.
