In his presentation on “Key tax obligations and incentives driving SME growth” at the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗨𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮 𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝗠𝗶𝗱-𝗦𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆 launch, Tusiime Mark - ADIT, Senior Manager, Tax & Regulatory Services at KPMG Uganda, underscored that while many SMEs view tax primarily as a cost of doing business, the tax framework also presents significant opportunities to support growth and improve cash flow.

Mark highlighted a number of incentives available to businesses, including income tax exemptions for qualifying investors and exporters, tax holidays for eligible new businesses, VAT benefits for exporters, withholding tax exemptions for compliant taxpayers, and amnesty provisions on interest and penalties.

However, he noted that these opportunities can only be realised through deliberate tax planning, timely compliance, accurate record-keeping, and effective use of systems such as EFRIS.

Mark emphasised that tax should not simply be seen as money leaving a business, but as a strategic lever that can support investment, growth, and long-term sustainability for Uganda’s SMEs.
