Social Health Authority National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) is a State Parastatal that was established in 1966 as a department under the Ministry of Health.

The Social Health Authority (SHA) facilitates healthcare services from enlisted providers by pooling contributions, ensuring the equitable distribution of quality healthcare. The original Act of Parliament that set up this Fund in 1966 has over the years been reviewed to accommodate the changing healthcare needs of the Kenyan population, employment and restructuring in the health sector. Currently an NHIF Act No 9 of 1998 governs the Fund. The transformation of NHIF from a department of the Ministry of Health to a state of corporation was aimed at improving effectiveness and efficiency. The Fund's core mandate is to provide medical insurance cover to all its members and their declared dependants (spouse and children). The NHIF membership is open to all Kenyans who have attained the age of 18 years and years and have a monthly income of more than Ksh 1000. NHIF has 31 fully autonomous branches across the country. Each of these branches offers all NHIF services including payment of benefits to hospitals or members or employers. Smaller satellite offices and service points in district hospitals also serve these branches.

Mombasa has led the way in registration. Now, the focus is on ensuring that those registered have active cover.

SHA CEO Dr. Mercy Mwangangi today met the Governor of Mombasa County H.E Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir and the county’s health leadership to identify practical ways of expanding access to healthcare for residents.

Mombasa currently leads the country in SHA registrations. Discussions therefore focused on building on this progress by encouraging contributions and ensuring that more registered households have active cover when they need care.

The teams also reviewed service delivery in county facilities during the Mwezi wa Baba free medical care programme.

Dr. Mwangangi commended the Governor and the county health team for their commitment to improving healthcare and reaffirmed SHA’s readiness to work with the County Government to advance Universal Health Coverage in Mombasa.

Attention healthcare providers!!

As SHA contracting continues, healthcare facilities, diagnostic centres and stand-alone pharmacies are required to ensure that their licences, facility details, staff affiliations, equipment records and approved services are accurate, current and aligned with the relevant regulator’s records.

The attached joint notices issued by SHA together with KMPDC, PPB, KMLTTB, KNRA and NCI outline the requirements relating to:

Facility classification and licensed services

Pharmacy and laboratory licensing

Licensing of radiation equipment

Certification of cancer centres

Registration and affiliation of facilities and healthcare workers

Facilities should address any licensing or certification gaps, ensure that healthcare workers declare their affiliations through Practice 360, and submit the required documents through the SHA E-Contracting Platform.

More time for healthcare providers to complete contracting!

SHA has extended the healthcare provider contracting transition period to 31st December 2026, allowing facilities additional time to complete the e-contracting process.

Existing contracts remain valid, ensuring uninterrupted access to healthcare services for SHA beneficiaries.

SHA County Offices will continue providing guidance and support through the ongoing HAKIKA contracting clinics.
