ASEA CONFERENCE 2024 -DAY 2 AFTERNOON SESSION

The final afternoon session of the ASEA Conference 2024 provided an engaging conclusion to three days of transformative discussions among African capital market leaders. The session began with a panel discussion, moderated by Mr. Douglas Kativu, Director of GRI Africa, focused on key Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors shaping African markets. The distinguished panel included Mr. Tarik Senhaji, CEO of the Casablanca Stock Exchange, Ms. Heba El Serafi, Vice Chairperson of the Egyptian Exchange, Mr. John Gibson, CEO of Chobe Holdings Limited, and Mr. Tshephang Loeto, Chief Investment Officer of the Botswana Public Officers Pension Fund. Their insights highlighted the integration of ESG principles into market frameworks and the role of sustainability in promoting economic resilience, offering the audience actionable strategies to advance ESG practices across Africa.

Following the panel, Ms. Lina Tonui, Project Manager of the African Exchanges Linkage Project, presented a detailed progress update on this transformative initiative. She outlined key milestones achieved in enhancing cross-border trading, harmonizing market systems, and improving liquidity within African exchanges.

The session concluded with the exciting announcement that the Rwanda Stock Exchange would host the 2025 ASEA Conference. Ms. Kelebogile Kewagamang, Vice Chairperson of the Central Securities Depository Botswana, expressed sincere gratitude to all participants and organizers. In his closing remarks, Mr. Pierre Celestin Rwabukumba, President of ASEA, emphasized the importance of innovation and collaboration in transforming Africaโ€™s financial ecosystems. The afternoon wrapped up on a high note, leaving attendees inspired to apply the insights and connections gained during the conference to further enhance Africa's capital markets.

ASEA Conference 2024 โ€“ Day 2 Morning Session:

The second day of the ASEA Conference 2024 kicked off with a thought-provoking presentation by Mr. Pedro Guazo, CEO and Representative of the UN Secretary-General at the United Nations Global Pension Fund Investment Office. His talk, titled "How Can African Markets Make Themselves Appealing to Asset Owners?", emphasized the importance of governance, transparency, and sustainability in attracting global investors to African markets. He highlighted how aligning market practices with global investor expectations can unlock transformative potential for the continent.

Next, Mr. Stefano Falciani, Head of International Development at ARQA Technologies, and Mr. Ilya Prokopenko, Director of Sales and Marketing at ARQA Technologies, delivered a session on "Digitization and AI in Business Operations: Revolutionizing Trading and Analytics". They explored how emerging technologies can improve trading efficiency and analytics, giving African exchanges a competitive advantage.

Following this, Mr. Oduetse Motshidisi, CEO of the Non-Bank Financial Institutions Regulatory Authority, addressed "Regulation as a Key Driver of Innovation in African Capital Markets โ€“ Key Lessons from Other Markets". He discussed how strong regulatory frameworks can foster innovation, build investor confidence, and drive market development.

The morning's discussions transitioned into panel sessions, starting with "The Landscape of Product Innovation on the Continent: How Exchanges Are Embracing the Rise of Alternative Asset Classes". Moderated by Ms. Nerina Visser, CFA, Director of ETF SA, the panel featured Mr. Tiaan Bazuin, CEO of the Namibian Stock Exchange; Mr. Frank Mwiti, CEO of the Nairobi Securities Exchange; Mr. Kopano Bolokwe, Acting CEO of the BSE; and Ms. Fikile Mbhokota, CEO of SATRIX. They shared insights on how African exchanges are adapting to the growing demand for new asset classes, and discussed opportunities for collaboration and innovation in this space.

The session concluded with a second panel on "How Can We Accelerate the SME Development Agenda in Africa?" moderated by Ms. Tshegofatso Tlhong, CFA, Chief Investment Officer at Kgori Capital Botswana. Panelists included Mr. Nicholas Kabaso, CEO of the Lusaka Securities Exchange; Mr. Peter Nalitolela, CEO of the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange; Mr. Kalyanaraman Vijay, Managing Partner at Grant Thornton Botswana; and Ms. Pedzani Tafa, Managing Director of BBS Bank. The panel focused on practical strategies for supporting SMEs, stressing the importance of access to capital, financial inclusion, and regulatory frameworks tailored to drive growth and economic resilience across Africa.

Acting President and Minister of Finance, Ndaba Gaolathe, has declared that Africa is on the brink of a capital market renaissance, one that will attract a diverse base of investors and align with global financial standards.

Speaking at the ongoing 27th Annual African Securities Exchanges Association Executive Conference (ASEA) hosted by the Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE), Gaolathe emphasized the importance of creating resilient, distinctly African capital markets designed to tackle the continentโ€™s unique challenges and drive long-term economic growth. He highlighted the need for robust market infrastructure that will position Africa as a key player in the global financial landscape.

He noted that capital markets should build a fit for purpose system, calling for improved regulatory framework and policies. โ€œ We are Bringing down the walls that inhibit our people from building.โ€ He said. Adding that the time is now to make African exchanges the center of the globe.

Ndaba went on that stock exchanges should assist in the actualization of the dreams of the people through mobilizing capital

BSE chairperson, Neo Mooki said the event is a moment of reflection and a catalyst for progress. โ€œASEA envisions a future where African markets thrive and fuel enterprise. Thus the theme, fostering capital markets through innovation. This puts the shared passion for the role of artificial intelligence in trading.โ€ She said.

President of ASEA, Pierre Rwabukumba reiterated the importance of the Fourth Industrial Revolution as a tool for accessibility and inclusivity in capital markets. He called on the attendees to enhance standards and drive change. โ€œ ASEA stands for all of us, our continent. Walking the talk is paramount for our development. We need tangible, measurable objectives and to be accountable for we are facing the same issues of liquidity and no products, it just that we are on different levels,โ€ echoed Rwabukumba.

Director Trade in Services, Investment, IPR and
Digital Trade in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) , Emily Mburu-Ndori, lamented that market fragmentation hinders realization of economies of scale noting that AfCFTA and ASEA represent a paradigm shift in the regional integration block to provide a seamless market. โ€œHarmonization is important in catalyzing trade and innovation African capital markets. Capital markets foster economic resilience, they are a tool for industrialization and trade.โ€
