PROJECT FINANCING OF MBARARA MAKHAN SINGH MARKET, UGANDA, EAST AFRICA.

On Thursday, October 26th, 2023 The Mbarara Makhan Singh Market Association (Limited by Guarantee) mandated Benchmark Solutions Limited for The Project Financing of the legacy project. This agreement marks marks a significant step forward, in the revitalization of the Mbarara Makhan Singh Market, an iconic trading center that has been a cornerstone of Mbarara's regional commerce since 1960.
The $11.633 Million Real Estate Project Financing will be used to transform the existing market into a modern, seven-story shopping center featuring 280 lockup shops, 130 shelled rooms, 330 stalls, a daycare center, 30 toilet facilities, 60 underground parking bays, and 30 roadside parking bays.The construction of this innovative shopping center is projected to take place over a span of 28 to 36 months.

will receive close to $4 million from the African Development Bank to urgently procure more than 3,000 tons of to cover part of the upcoming agricultural season, which begins in May. The country’s needs for the entire season are estimated at 145,000 tons.

Bank President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina said two existing projects from the bank’s current portfolio in Burundi will help meet the immediate needs.

Burundi’s Minister of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Audace Niyonzima, requested the support on behalf of President Évariste Nadyishimiye during a recent meeting in at bank headquarters.

The Bank's active portfolio in Burundi comprises 19 operations with commitments of $372 million, mainly concentrated in energy (45%), transport (34%), agriculture (12%) and social (8%) sectors.

African Guarantee Fund and Angola’s Credit Guarantee Fund - Fundo de Garantia de Crédito (FGC) have today signed a memorandum of understanding to promote SME growth and development through innovative finance solutions.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Secretary of State for Budget and Public Investment Juciene de Sousa, the Secretary of State for Economy and Planning, Milton Reis, the Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Angola, Pedro Castro Silva and African Development Bank's AFAWA Manager Esther Dassanou.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, our Group CEO, Jules Ngankam, highlighted the need for more pan-African partnerships saying, “This is a partnership to unlock financing for SMEs and reduce the risk from banks when lending to SMEs. It is truly a show of pan-African cohesion between African organizations.”

Mr. Luzayadio Simba, CEO, Fundo de Garantia de Crédito also emphasized the importance of investing in SMEs for a growing economy, “We want to ensure that SMEs will have access to a credit and financial line to materialize their projects through the guarantee that will be insured in partnership between FGC and AGF”.

The MoU between FGC and AGF is in line with the African Development Bank Group’s commitment to bridging the gender financing gap via the Affirmative Finance Action for Women in Africa (AFAWA) initiative. AfDB’s AFAWA Manager, Esther Dassanou, added, “With the guarantee that's being signed, we are hoping more partners will join us on this journey to bridge the $42 billion gender financing gap”.

The signing ceremony precedes the launch of the AFAWA Finance Series in Angola which kicks off tomorrow.
