In Kwale County, it has meant strengthening coconut, cassava, moringa, and poultry value chains through farmer training, climate-smart technologies, food safety systems, market access, and investments in value addition.
During the Kwale County Close-out Forum, stakeholders reflected on the achievements realized under Green Employment in Agriculture Programme (GEAP) between 2021 and 2026.
The programme reached 4,731 farmers across the county, surpassing its target, while facilitating the trade of over 21,418 MT of produce valued at more than KES 776 million through farmer groups, cooperatives, and market linkages.
A strong focus on commercialization and standards saw 3,345 coconut and moringa farmers certified under Global GAP and other certification schemes, strengthening access to high-value markets and improving compliance with market requirements.
GEAP also invested in building farmer capacity, with over 10,000 farmers benefiting from training in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), food safety, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, governance, gender inclusion, and climate-smart agriculture.
The programme promoted innovative technologies including azolla, Black Soldier Fly (BSF), feed formulation, fireless brooders, butterfly water harvesting systems, and climate-resilient production practices, contributing to the adoption of climate adaptation measures by 5,876 farmers across the county.
To strengthen value addition and aggregation, GEAP supported strategic investments including solar driers for cassava and moringa processing, poultry aggregation centres, coconut nurseries, water infrastructure, seed farms, and community-based enterprise facilities.
The programme also played a catalytic role in strengthening food safety systems, supporting the development of the Kwale County Food Safety Coordination Bill and building partnerships that continue to advance sustainable agricultural development within the county.
As GEAP concludes, the innovations, partnerships, and farmer-led enterprises established continue to provide a strong foundation for resilient livelihoods, sustainable food systems, and inclusive economic growth in Kwale County.
