Is there a way for a small business to compete with a big and established business? A mouse is a threat to the elephant. A mouse cannot climb on an Elephant unless the elephant is asleep. It climbs up and eats the elephants leftovers. A mouse can suffocate an Elephant by crawling up its trunk. If the Elephant wakes up, the mouse which is very cheeky runs fast and nibbles it's feet and hence the elephants gets confused and instead runs away.

LESSONS FOR A SMALL BUSINESS
1. A small business needs to act when the big business is 'asleep'. There are times a big business reaches it's comfort zone and they relax.
2. A small business should consider the leftovers of the big business. The leftovers are the clients who have not been satisfied their needs. They are the first step to understanding the big business.
3. The customer is a business's trunk. A small business needs to know how to treat the customer better than the big business. Find out what they miss, what they like most, what is convenient for them., then SUFFOCATE the big business.
4. The big business might wake up when they realize there is danger so a small business must be cheeky and smart like a mouse. The small business has to find a way to be ahead of the big business.
5. When you are a step ahead of a big business you nibble their feet, they might not run away, they will consider you as a competition.

The Eagle in a storm

__You need to develop relationships with people based on trust.

The other day I was in New York and decided to attend a church service with a dear friend of more than 20 years, Dr AR Bernard of Christian Cultural Centre. During the service they showed a video called the "Marshmallow Test." Young children were put in a room with a marshmallow (a type of sweet) and told that if they didn’t eat it, they’d get an extra one when the adult returned.

Left alone, the children then had to manage their impulse to simply grab the sweet and eat it. Many of them managed to control themselves and so earned the extra sweet. However, experts found that those children who’d previously been let down by an adult ate the sweet immediately.

__Some of the children in the Marshmallow Test just didn’t value the promise made by the adult because they’d been betrayed by adults before!

So what has this got to do with our theme about surviving tough times… the Eagle in a storm? Everything. Getting through tough times will depend on how many relationships you have built up, based on trust!

When people trust you, it’s possible to get a helping hand during tough times. Some children were willing to wait because they trusted the adult who’d made a promise to them. Asking other people to wait or make sacrifices depends to a great extent on how much people believe they can trust you, based on previous conduct, particularly when you seemed to be the one with the upper hand.

As a matter of principle, you must build relationships with employees, partners, investors, and customers based on trust. It’s important to be known as a person of integrity. I’ve already written a great deal about respect for the rule of law. This is about respect for yourself as a person of moral character.

You must establish your track record as an honourable person when times are good. There’s no point in showing humility only when things get tough; you must be trustworthy when you’re flying high!

# If during the good times you and your family were splashing money around like there’s no tomorrow, you’ll find it difficult to call on others to make sacrifices.

# If you were never willing to pay your creditors (there’s never an excuse for this!), you’ll find it difficult, if not impossible, to secure credit during the tough times.

# If you broke agreements with impunity because you were powerful, no one will stand with you when it’s you who needs help.

__Who do you know who really trusts you?

__Who is out there that will stand up for you?

Real trust transcends your ability to go to members of your family, your clan, your tribe, your religion, your nationality or even your race. When you sit down to reflect upon this issue, consider how many people from outside your "comfort circle” of family, clan, tribe, race, religion, would consider you trustworthy? This is the "marshmallow test" for each one of us, everyday. In Christianity, it’s the real interpretation of the Parable of the Good Samaritan.

Personally, one of the greatest testimonies of my life is the number of people who have stood in my corner when I needed help. It never ceases to amaze me how far people are prepared to stand in my corner. It's called "unmerited favor" and a blessing for which I am deeply grateful.

There are also people out there who I’ll try to give almost anything to help out when they are in trouble!

Do all you can every day to reach out to other people and build trust. Be a person of your word. Your character as a person of integrity is far more important than any money in the bank, fancy car or anything material in your life.

Types of people in the business world.

There are two types of people in this world. The starters and the non-starters.
Both are exposed to equal opportunities but their reactions are quite different and that's what draws a line between them.
A non-starter is the person who sees an idea, ignores it and later complains that the government, family or community isn't doing enough to help them out.
The starter is the person who spots an idea at its humblest level and considers it. Those two people end up very different in life. Give them 30 years, the small-starter will have established a legacy but the non-starter will be facing early retirement from a job he or she didn't love.
So today, you can either choose to be a starter or a non-starter.

As you warm up to choosing your next 30 years, Green Credit Group Ltd wishes you the very best as you begin your week and your journey to establishing your legacy.

Don't sit back and watch time fly. If you need to do anything, better do it now when you still can and the ex*****on plan is still fresh in your mind. Don't be scared with what people will say, they are already saying something while you are doing nothing.Whatever your hands and brain set to do, do diligently and with passion. God has never let you down so don't let yourself down.

YOU CAN FIND DIGNITY IN ALL YOU DO.

His name is Bashir Suleiman, he's a Mai-barrow and a proud one at that. I was privileged to have him gather my groceries and produce for me as I shopped in the market today.

First of all he was very well dressed with his clothes well ironed as if he was going to a proper office work and I was told by the fruit seller who saw my initial surprise when Bashir approached me that it was his custom to dress well daily to his Mai-barrow job. It got even more interesting when I caught a whiff of his "perfume" and noticed his socked feet in a pair of well polished sandals😀. Other barrow pushers approached me but with my curiosity already piqued and biased towards Bashir, I felt it an honor to have him gather my stuff for today.

Next, he had very good communication skills, his grammar may not have been ivy-league standard, but we communicated very easily while he helped bridge the gap between my Hausa language spattering and my needful communication in same language with my customers who spoke little or no English.

Bashir was very much involved in every bit of my shopping making sure I wasn't cheated and my change was properly counted out and given to me.

Bashir also showed me the best places I didn't even know existed in the market to buy the freshest produce at competitive prices.

Bashir was attentive, involved, sharp, smart, fast and market savvy too.

Whilst we were shopping, Bashir got as many as 3 different phone calls from customers like me who were en route the market and wanted him on standby for them. One told him where to wait for her while the other told him she was prepared to wait till he was free to serve her since he was currently engaged.

Bashir did his job with a great attitude and a smile, he was polite and courteous yet humble and ready to serve.

At the end, I had to give Bashir much more than I have ever given a Mai-barrow( and believe me I always tip them generously) because Bashir beat all stereotypes and made my life much easier today.

Of course I left with Bashir's phone number decisively saved in my phone book. People like Bashir have further strengthened my belief that the future generation of our country can and will excel and be better than the past generations. Tomorrow we may just see a registered company--Bashir Uber-Mai-barrow Ltd, with clean, well dressed and courteous service boys...making shoppers' lives easier, earning good money, even paying taxes to the government and contributing their quota to the system versus the modern day entrenchment of criminality by the teeming unemployable youth that are not ready to work yet maraud the society today.

Now this is what I call, progress, long sightedness, wisdom and imminent vital prosperity. Let's all join hands and make the skies of these young men a stepping stone by encouraging them in whatever ways possible.

Thanks for reading...

Are you prepared to become very serious?

How prepared are you for your next level?

Don't expect others to take you seriously when you are not prepared to take yourself seriously.

Be rest assured storms will come, and in different forms too. Ever interacted with an eagle? The eagle does not fear the storm, neither does it pretend it’s not there. It seeks to thrive despite the storm, just as Faith does not deny the facts on the ground, it overcomes the facts on the ground.

Don't overextend yourself. Don't borrow unnecessarily and certainly don't borrow to keep up your "appearance.Stay true to your course.

Your greatest battle is always on your mind, change the way you see things. The best way is to Learn, Unlearn and Relearn.
