How many fingers are down?

In reinsurance, the real test often comes when a loss challenges the assumptions behind your programme.

Claims experience, accumulation, retention, capacity and reinstatement provisions all tell a story about how your risk is evolving.

The question is whether your reinsurance programme is evolving with it.

A reinsurance renewal should not be a rollover of last year’s programme. It should be a reassessment of the risks your portfolio carries today.

Portfolio growth, changes in class mix, maximum exposures, accumulation and claims experience can all alter the risk profile over the course of a year. That is why renewal is an important opportunity to test whether your retention, attachment points, limits, exclusions and capacity remain aligned with the portfolio.

At Reinsurance Solutions Kenya, we believe effective treaty renewal starts with understanding how the portfolio has evolved and what that means for the reinsurance protection required.

The question is not whether your treaty worked last year. It is whether it still works for the portfolio you have today.

Kenya’s rainy seasons can put pressure on multiple classes of business at the same time. Property, motor, agriculture and infrastructure exposures can become interconnected when severe weather affects the same locations.

For insurers, that makes rainfall more than a seasonal consideration. It is a reminder to understand where exposure is concentrated, how risks can accumulate and whether reinsurance programmes remain fit for the portfolios they protect.

The strongest strategies are not built when losses occur. They are shaped by understanding the portfolio before the event.

works with insurers to review exposure, identify accumulation and develop reinsurance programmes that respond to the realities of evolving risk.

Running for a greener tomorrow. 🌳🏃🏽‍♀️

On Saturday, members of the team traded boardrooms for the trails at Karura Forest, joining colleagues from across the insurance industry for , organised by Continental Reinsurance, the OESAI-Organisation of Eastern and Southern Africa Insurers and The Actuarial Society of Kenya (TASK).

The run brought together professionals from across the sector to support tree conservation, connect outside the usual industry setting, and contribute to a cause with a lasting impact.

The strength of a reinsurance market is shaped not only by the capacity it provides but also by the quality of the relationships, expertise and knowledge that underpin it.

That was reflected in two recent engagements at .

We welcomed the Africa Specialty Risks for a courtesy visit, creating space for a broader exchange on the regulatory and market developments influencing the reinsurance sector. Conversations of this nature are important as the industry continues to evolve, bringing together different perspectives on how we can strengthen capacity and respond to emerging market needs.

We also hosted the WAICA Re team for a technical training session on Bonds & Surety. Beyond the technical principles, the session provided an opportunity to examine the practical considerations involved in structuring, assessing and managing these specialised risks.

For us, these engagements represent two important dimensions of a stronger industry: meaningful institutional relationships and continuous technical development.

According to the Central Bank of Kenya’s Financial Sector Stability Report 2024, reported cyber-fraud cases in Kenya’s sector more than doubled, rising from 153 in 2023 to 353 in 2024. The amount exposed reached KES 1.9 billion, with actual losses approaching KES 1.5 billion.

For , strong controls remain essential. But controls can reduce risk; they cannot eliminate it.

A provides an additional layer of protection against defined losses arising from risks including employee dishonesty, theft, forgery and fraud.

Effective therefore goes beyond prevention. It also means having the right protection in place when controls are tested and losses occur.

At , we help financial institutions assess complex exposures and structure insurance and reinsurance solutions that respond to the risks behind the numbers.

Your portfolio changes. Your reinsurance programme should keep pace.

As an insurer grows, enters new markets, adds new lines of business or sees shifts in its mix of risks, the programme that worked before may no longer tell the full story.

That doesn’t always mean buying more reinsurance. It means taking a fresh look at what you’re writing, what you’re retaining and where you need protection.

Because the right reinsurance programme isn’t simply about transferring risk. It’s about making sure your protection reflects the business you’re carrying today.

When was the last time you reviewed whether your reinsurance programme still matches your portfolio?

A reinsurance programme is designed around the risks an insurer is carrying at a particular point in time. As the portfolio changes, the programme may also need to be reviewed.

Significant growth, expansion into new markets, changes in the mix of business, concentration in certain sectors or geographies, major losses and new lines of business can all change an insurer’s overall risk exposure.

This does not necessarily mean that more reinsurance is needed. It means the current programme should be reviewed against the portfolio as it stands today. This includes looking at retentions, limits, capacity, structure, and the risks being transferred.

The objective is to ensure that the risks an insurer retains are deliberate and that the risks it transfers are appropriately structured to support the business.

As the El Niño season approaches, the question for insurers is not only how severe an event could be, but how widely its impact could spread.

A single flood can affect homes, businesses, vehicles, infrastructure, and supply chains simultaneously. What appear to be separate risks on individual policies can quickly become a single, concentrated portfolio exposure.

This is why accumulation analysis matters.

Understanding where risks are concentrated, how they may respond to the same event and where losses could accumulate gives insurers a clearer view of their potential exposure and the basis to make better decisions on risk appetite, catastrophe limits, retention and reinsurance.

As climate-related events become more interconnected with financial risk, portfolio-level visibility is becoming increasingly important to resilience.

At Reinsurance Solutions Kenya, we help insurers look beyond individual risks to understand the bigger picture because resilience begins with knowing where exposures converge.
