Throw Back Thursday- A brief history of the Self Help Programme now, The Economic Empowerment Programme.
The Archdiocese of Nairobi has over 30 years been building capacity on economic empowerment and financial literacy; inculcating a savings culture mostly to marginalized communities and lending them to establish businesses as well as expand existing ones.
This model was adopted back in 1983 at Kiriko Parish when the Servant of God, Maurice Cardinal Otunga, the late, had a look into the future. From his eyes, the perfect logic was a provision of a means through which people could afford to feed their families, clothe and educate their children. A future where fewer Christians flocked parishes to ask for food- basically a future where communities are self-sufficient
Several years down the line, the program has grown to cater for over 190, 000 members in 206 groups within the Archdiocese of Nairobi. The programme has enabled the very marginalized communities with meager and inconsistent earnings access financial services that are designed to cater for their needs. Members can save as little as Ksh. 50 per month and qualify to take out a loan six months after joining.
Meet Mary Gathoni, 58, a Member of Our Lady of Visitation Makadara Self Help Group was able to build a house through her savings and a loan. The project is in its final stages of completion.
