I was reading a book the other day and it said that one of our basic human needs is having certainty. We crave it so much that we will violate our values to get it.
This might explain why we do things we know aren’t good for us, because we are certain they will make us feel good in the moment.
Turns out banks also like certainty.
They do not like to lend small businesses money because many do not have certainty in how they get clients, and they rely on unpredictable methods like referrals and seasonality.
I’m not saying referrals are bad. It’s just that in today’s competitive marketplace, clients have many providers to choose from and waiting for referrals to grow your business is like gambling - it depends on conditions that are not in your control.
Then there are the smart entrepreneurs who use digital marketing to get clients.
But after months and sometimes years of frustrating results from consistently declining organic reach and unprofitable boosted posts, they decide to hire a digital marketing “expert” who knows less about marketing a business than they do.
