This is Melvin celebrating a climb in the Kakamega National Reserve, widely billed as Kenya’s only rainforest. When Carl saw this image, his first thought was, “She did THAT hike in THOSE shoes?” But seriously, forests like this one are under pressure from people cutting trees to get firewood or to make charcoal to sell. They need to feed their families. It’s good if they have a better source of fuel and income, through being able to earn a living through a home-based business. These pay homage to one of the great contributions of Africa’s women to the fashion world — their brightly-coloured Kitenge or Ankara fabric dresses.
