This time, we had a joint Zemi session with the Zemi of Professor Maki, with us being the host Zemi. It was absolutely an excellent session.

Three teams from our Zemi each delivered a presentation on the topic of corporate governance. The interaction between the presenters and Maki Zemi members has made the discussion significantly robust. Thanks to today’s session, students from both Zemi got opportunities to communicate and learn from each other.

(Nov. 16th)We had a company visit during our last Zemi session to Cisco Japan, and it was absolutely AWESOME. We visited the HQ office located at “Tokyo Midtown” in Minato, Tokyo. During the session, several senior staff members from Cisco delivered a thought-provoking presentation on Cisco’s environment, business, finance, social responsibilities, etc. A robust Q&A session followed before we were guided through the entire HQ. We visited the office area, exhibit area, and so on. It was a wonderful experience for our Zemi, and we are grateful that Cisco provided us with this fantastic opportunity to learn about business and the industry. We hope we will continuously have meaningful and productive sessions in the future!

Have you ever heard about the “ERS Award”? In reflection of the School’s adoption of “responsibility” as a Mission commitment in 2017 and to promote ERS (Ethics, Responsibility, and Sustainability) activities amongst students both in and outside of the School, WBS established an ERS Student/Alumni Award in October 2017 to recognize activities related to ethics, responsibility, and sustainability that students/alumni are engaged in based on their social impact.

Today, we were excited to have Ronrich Tan, who has just graduated from WBS this September with the “ERS Student Paper Award” granted for his dissertation, to talk about his research here at WBS. We discussed how to conduct research both quantitatively and qualitatively. The thought-proving presentation concluded with a robust discussion in the Zemi. We really enjoyed today’s session.

Zemi member, Gunawan, did an excellent and thought-provoking presentation on the heated topic of Fintech, guiding us through the development of the Finance and Fintech industry and the insights we can have today based on the latest trend of Fintech issues. We talked about the correlation between Fintech and other sectors and how humanity has creatively utilized current technology in financial applications (Robot Financial Advisor, Distributed Ledger, etc.). A robust discussion followed, during which we shared our thoughts on the dynamics of Fintech and the future of this exciting field. ( LAU Gunawan Blay Letaief @臼井 Zhao Feng Shan Lan)

Today, we are thrilled to have Aki Takahashi san as our guest speaker for the Zemi session. Takahashi san is the CEO of Musasisakai Driving School (https://musasisakai-ds.co.jp/) and Brilliant Hope, Inc. (https://www.brilliant-hope.com/), and more fascinatingly, she is an alumnus from Waseda Business School. ( Lau, @臼井絢一, Zhao Gunawan, Blay, Chedy Letaief, Shun Feng Shan, Xincheng Lan)

It is interesting to get to know that the Pandemic Crisis can actually positively influence the driving school industry, simply because of people’s increasing preference to use private vehicles instead of public transportation methods. Takahashi san talked about how she managed to REDEFINE the driving school by polishing the corporate vision & philosophy and how she started focusing more on customer service to enhance the whole performance of the business.

Additionally, Takahashi san shared with us her experience and research at Stanford University. Design thinking came up as an attractive topic. How Takahashi san leveraged her research on design thinking to renovate the existing training system of her driving school was absolutely fascinating and thought-provoking. We had a robust discussion.

“How are offices changing?” “How do we look at remote work or hybrid working from different angles?” In the Zemi session this time, our Zemi member Xincheng Lan presented this thought-proving topic for the existing Zemi members and Zemi visitors (new M1 students) to discuss ( Lau, Blay, Chedy Letaief, Shun Feng Shan, Gunawan, Zhao, 臼井絢一). An interesting aspect was brought up that we need to consider the background under which hybrid working has been capturing people's attention, and that is the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic crisis and the fact that we are gradually shifting towards the post-covid era, an era in which the potential of everything remails unlimited.

According to the research and finding of The Economist, 1) For large multinational firms, the pandemic and hybrid working have changed the very idea and purpose of the office. The office of today, in a post-pandemic world, is a social destination; 2) Offices are being radically redesigned; 3) The changing office is changing the way bosses manage employees because a hybrid model requires a very high degree of trust; 4) This new world of hybrid working could shape what cities look like because remote working will affect the way we plan our cities.

For the last Zemi session of this semester, it was our privilege to have a joint Zemi with Maki Zemi. The students from Maki Zemi made presentations on possible business experiments that could be conducted. And the whole session was exciting and informative.

The presenters demonstrated their outstanding academic ability by showing how to SYSTEMATICALLY conduct experiments with excellent logic and design thinking approaches. Meanwhile, the interactions between two professors and all students made the session absolutely meaningful. We should do this more!

PS: for the picture, credit goes to the AMAZING “Insta360 ONE X2” from Maki Zemi. 😃

In today’s Zemi session, Zemi member Summer Zhao talked about her recent progress on her thesis and brought us an exciting topic, Carbon Neutrality. Carbon neutrality is a state of net-zero carbon dioxide emissions. This can be achieved by balancing emissions of carbon dioxide with its removal (often through carbon offsetting) or by eliminating emissions from society (the transition to the “post-carbon economy”). The term is used in the context of carbon dioxide-releasing processes associated with transportation, energy production, agriculture, and industry.

A robust discussion followed the presentation (Dave Lau Hitachi Lin JoJo Kang Evan Gadman Chandra Summer Zhao 臼井絢一 Chedy Letaief Roland Blay Daniel Gunawan Shun Feng Shan Xincheng Lan). We discussed where the most CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) emissions come from and how we can realize negative carbon emissions. To make the concept more tangible, Zhao has chosen to analyze the situation of Carbon Neutrality in China. It is enlightening to look at how China balances its fantastic developing speed and environmental policies as a rapidly developing country.

Two M2 students contributed to the main contents for the Zemi session today, Hitachi and Jojo, who talked about the ongoing process of their dissertation. With this chance, the M2 students could exchange their thoughts on how to smoothen and polish their writings. A robust discussion followed. And it was tremendously helpful and meaningful for the M1 students as well because they will soon enter the second year, a period that needs to be dedicated to thesis composition.

Following are the titles of their thesis.

Hitachi
"A Better Way to Success: Renovation to Performance Management in Manufacturing Business"

Jojo
"Business Plan: Preciser - Sports Analytics - Sports Predictive Analytics and Visualized Platform"

Today’s exciting session was delivered by Daniel Gunawan, who led us through two heated topics, Web 3.0 and Decentralized Autonomous Organization. (Dave Lau Hitachi Lin JoJo Kang Summer Zhao Evan Gadman Chandra 臼井絢一 Shun Feng Shan Chedy Letaief Roland Blay Daniel Gunawan Xincheng Lan) From the initial emergence of the Internet (Web 1.0) to the advanced and mixed Internet environment that we have today (Web 2.0 and Web 3.0), we’ve been constantly searching for better approaches to cooperate more efficiently and exploring the possibility of the whole network. And that’s how DAO has been increasingly captured our attention.

Web3 (also known as Web 3.0 and sometimes stylized as web is an idea for a new iteration of the World Wide Web based on blockchain technology, which incorporates concepts such as decentralization and token-based economics. Some technologists and journalists have contrasted it with Web 2.0, wherein they say data and content are centralized in a small group of companies sometimes referred to as "Big Tech". The term "Web3" was coined in 2014 by Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood, and the idea gained interest in 2021 from cryptocurrency enthusiasts, large technology companies, and venture capital firms.

A decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), sometimes called a decentralized autonomous corporation (DAC), is an organization constructed by rules encoded as a computer program that is often transparent, controlled by the organization's members and not influenced by a central government, in other words they are member-owned communities without centralized leadership. A DAO's financial transaction records and program rules are maintained on a blockchain.
