While the dust may have settled on the 2024 Siam Cup, clash between Jersey and Guernsey, the team at SaSo Strategic Advisers remains as passionate as ever about rugby and the Jersey Rugby Club.

Jersey’s government recently introduced new pension legislation that could impact you if you have more than one small pot pension.

Until the end of 2023, a small pot pension was classified as a scheme worth less than £19,000. Individuals could cash in their small pot pensions at any time.

The law has since reduced the classification of small pot pensions from £19,000 to £15,000, meaning those with pots worth more than £15,000 could miss out on the benefit of accessing their funds before retirement.

This reduction isn’t likely to be the only one. The government has already stated that further reductions to classify small pot pensions will occur in the years to come.

Jersey’s chess fans were excited to welcome some of Europe’s leading chess players to the 8th European Small Nations Chess Championship held at the Pomme d'Or Hotel, which took place between 28 October 2023 and 5 November 2023.

This was the first time that Jersey had ever hosted the championship.

SaSo Strategic was proud to sponsor the 8th European Small Nations team chess tournament with co-sponsor Grant Thornton Channel Islands.

SaSo has long been a sponsor and supporter of chess on the island, and it was a big moment for Jersey to host this special event thanks to Tournament Director Paul Wojciechowski and his hard work bringing the event to Jersey and The Pomme D’or in particular.

In previous years, Jersey hasn't fared so well, but the local team were delighted to achieve 8th place at this year's tournament, with wins against Cyprus (for the first time ever!), San Marino, and a draw against Guernsey.

Thanks to Community Savings for the recent post in which they promoted our recent support in funding the creation and launch of a Member app.

The app offers a simple online interface allowing its Members to view balances and transactions, undertake transfers between their accounts and access news and useful information to help them budget and manage their finances more effectively.

The charity had received a lot of feedback from its members, who explained that managing their money prior to the app's launch could be quite time-consuming. For example, they used to have to call or email the charity whenever they wanted to query their balance or a transaction or request a transfer.

Thanks to the new app, their Members can now easily access their accounts to view their balances and check recent transactions.

Supporting our local community has always been very high on our agenda, and this is one such example where our financial support will help make a difference to those who can sometimes struggle.

The Corporate Padel Summer League Finals Day ended at St Clements Golf & Sports Centre Padel Courts on Saturday, 29th July, and SaSo Strategic are delighted to announce that BOTH of its teams won first place!

SaSo entered two teams into the latest Corporate Padel league to give more of their team a chance to play in the competition. Winning five out of five matches in the group stages, both teams were proud to win the overall competition, Divisions 1 and 2, respectively.

This is the fourth time SaSo 1 has won overall in the Island Corporate Padel league and the second time for SaSo 2.

The Island Padel Corporate Padel Summer League ended at St Clements Golf & Sports Centre on 29 July 2023, and SaSo Strategic was attempting to uphold their three-times in-a-row win record.

With 24 teams registered to compete, the same number of registrations as the spring league, SaSo knew that competition would be even fiercer as the players had got far better with experience.

This time, SaSo decided to enter two teams. The original dream team would play in SaSo 1, while other members of the SaSo team, who had yet to have as much experience at the competition level, were invited to play in the SaSo 2 team.

SaSo 1 managed to retain their winning title for a fourth time, but the shock of the competition was that SaSo 2 managed to achieve a first-place title too!

SaSo Strategic Managing Director Garry Forbes said of his teams’ recent wins, “We thoroughly enjoyed the Summer Corporate padel leagues and met many new friends along the way. We feel fortunate that SaSo 1 and SaSo 2 both managed to win their semi-final and final matches on Finals Day, as all four matches were really tough, with three of them only being won by a narrow 2-1 score. A big thank you to Scott Clayton and his team at Island Padel for running such a well-organised and fun event. We are already looking forward to the Autumn corporate league starting in October.”

SaSo Strategic Advisers have always been avid fans of Jersey Rugby Club and are proud supporters and sponsors of Jersey RFC. Their affiliation is even more special because of their Financial Adviser, Euan Spencer , who plays for the Jersey RFC men’s team.

Earlier this year, we were delighted to have been the match day sponsors at the League’s final match against Wi******er Rugby Club. This was a strongly contested match, with Wi******er who were the closest competition to Jersey in the league this season. The match finished 23-13 on the day in Jersey’s favour.

As part of the match day sponsorship package, SaSo was invited to host two tables for a three-course lunch in the Clubhouse and to enjoy watching the match from the Clubhouse balcony. As an added touch, SaSo also gifted their guests a branded woollen scarf with SaSo and the Jersey RFC’s logos embroidered on the scarf.

When we were choosing SaSo’s brand colours of gold and black, little did we realise at the time of ordering the scarves that these colours were Wi******er’s team colours! So, on the face of it, it looked as if we had two tables of Wi******er supporters enjoying lunch and the game in the Jersey Clubhouse!

The humour was thankfully not lost on the Jersey crowd, nor was it on the Wi******er Club’s Chairman, who graciously accepted some SaSo scarves. We understand that the scarves have now taken pride of place on the Wi******er’s Clubhouse wall.

Jersey Rugby Club has enjoyed a formidable season, having won not only the 103rd Siam Cup with a very respectable score of 42-26 against Guernsey Raiders but also becoming the team achieving joint 2nd highest points away from home and the 4th most tries scored in the English league system across all levels.

Formerly known as the Jersey Reds Athletic (effectively the Jersey Reds' second team), the team is now called Jersey RFC, the name the current professional side used to use before they became the Jersey Reds in 2016.

In the 2021/22 season, the Jersey RFC membership approved splitting the Jersey Reds from Jersey RFC, with the Reds remaining in the Championship, which they have just won.

Even more special is that the team has mirrored Jersey Reds’ success this season, winning all their games.

They hope to continue their winning streak as they enter Level Six and seek to continue their promotion, closing the gap from Guernsey Raiders, currently competing in Level Four of the League.

SaSo Strategic Advisers have supported the Jersey Rugby Club for many years. We are particularly proud of our Financial Adviser, Euan Spencer, who plays for the first men’s team and who participated in this year’s Siam Cup, which took place at Stade Santander on Saturday, 6 May 2023.

The Siam Cup, the second oldest rugby trophy in the world (2nd to the Calcutta Cup), was played in Jersey earlier this month. In its 103rd year, the Cup is fiercely contended between Jersey and Guernsey.

Last year, Jersey faced a brutal loss against Guernsey, who won with a crushing score of 52-0.

Keen to overcome the shame of last year’s result, Jersey was incredibly eager to return the silverware to Jersey, reignite the team, and maintain their winning streak, having won every single game played in the Level Seven championships in that recent season.

And come back they did, with a victorious score of 42 - 26 against Guernsey Raiders.
