Engineering starts where you can’t see it. From defining the flow conditions to analysing velocity, pressure and complex aerodynamic phenomena, CFD simulations are a key part of turning our ideas into an aircraft ready to fly.

Thanks to Siemens and STAR-CCM+, Team S55 can explore, test and improve the aircraft’s aerodynamic behaviour before taking it to the sky.

Simulation is not just about predicting performance, it’s about understanding it, refining it and pushing the design one step further.

✈️ From simulation to optimization.

With Ansys LS-DYNA, we can take our structural analysis one step further: studying how different composite configurations behave under the demanding loads involved in a ditching event.

By modelling the sandwich structure of our hulls, carbon-fiber skins combined with a polymer foam core, we can virtually test different laminate configurations, materials, thicknesses and fiber orientations.

The goal? Reduce structural weight while maintaining the strength and energy absorption needed during water impact.

Virtual testing allows us to explore more solutions, optimize the design and reduce the need for physical prototypes — making the development process faster, more efficient and more cost-effective.

WE ARE BACK! ✈️

After the summer break, Team S55 is back, and we’re ready to share what’s happening behind the scenes of our project.

We’re starting with one of the tools that supports us throughout the development of our aircraft: ANSA, provided by BETA CAE Systems.

From mesh generation to data exchange and fluid–structure interaction, ANSA allows us to work across different simulation environments while maintaining consistency, compatibility and an efficient workflow.

A valuable tool that helps us turn our ideas into increasingly accurate simulations, and, step by step, bring our S55 closer to flight. 🌊✈️

TeamS55 is heading to Vigna di Valle (Rome) for a unique event dedicated to the rich heritage of Italian aviation! ✈️
We’re proud to collaborate with the MUSAM – Historical Museum of the Italian Air Force for a special day that blends innovation with aeronautical history.

During the event, we’ll showcase our project through interactive activities, technical insights, and most importantly, present our S5502 prototype right where its story finds its deepest meaning.

The initiative has been granted the patronage of CESMA – Giulio Douhet Center for Military Aerospace Studies, recognizing its technical, historical, and scientific value.

A huge thank you to our trusted partner Ellena Spa and their subsidiary SPEM for their essential support in the development of our seaplane. ✈️

With over 75 years of expertise in precision mechanics, Ellena Spa has been a key player in blending traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology to deliver top-quality solutions.

In the case of our S5502 prototype, their expertise was crucial in the design and production of the engine mount assembly, which includes the structure that supports the engine and propellers. By utilizing Additive Manufacturing techniques, we were able to create these critical components with precision and efficiency, contributing significantly to the success of our flight.

What an unforgettable 3 days at the Maker Faire Rome 2024! The S55 Team is honored to have joined in such an inspiring experience. From meeting so many new faces to strengthening bonds with other incredible teams, this event was beyond magical. ✨

Behind every successful design are countless simulations and analyses!💻

At TeamS55, we rely on Beta CAE Systems software to perform critical simulations for our seaplane project. ✈️ From refining complex geometries to creating high-quality meshes for CFD and FEM analysis, ANSA pre-processor and META post-processor allow us to evaluate and optimize our hydrodynamic and aerodynamic designs with precision. ⚙️🔧
