Up2Circ Up2Circ is an EU-funded project targeting European SMEs on their transition to the circular economy

Up2Circ is an EU-funded project targeting European SMEs to accelerate and scale up their transition to the circular economy. Up2Circ will develop and implement efficient measures tailored to the specific needs of companies. 92 SMEs will receive a financial support up to 50,000 EUR. We are a team of 7 institutions from 7 countries:

Project goals:

• support objectives of the European Green Deal and of the EU SME Strategy for a sustainable and digital Europe;

• increase resilience of SMEs, by fostering technological and social innovation in SMEs to support their transition to more sustainable business models and more resource-efficient and circular processes and infrastructures;

• increase competitive sustainability of SMEs through the uptake of advanced technologies;

• exploit synergies between existing EU networks and initiatives in support of SMEs to create stronger ecosystems for innovation, fostering the ecological, social and economic transformation of SMEs. This project has received funding from the Horizon Europe Programme under grant agreement No 101091367.

How much bread is wasted everyday, that could still be recovered to give life to new products?

🍞 This is the business of Biova Project, a small Italian company, that recovers and transforms surplus recovered from the supply chain into valuable new and healthy food products, such as beer, drinks and snacks, combining environmental and social sustainability goals.

✌ With support from the Up2Circ project, Biova validated a new business model for the industrial to internally recover its own surplus streams, to transform bread crusts and off-cuts into a functional food-grade (Ri-Flour). This flour is then reintroduced directly into the production lines as a raw material.

The project implemented a “Closing the Loop” strategy by enabling a supply chain where waste from one production phase becomes the raw material for the next.

🥪 Industrial bakery lines generate massive amounts of surplus bread, such as sandwich bread crusts and off-cuts, which are currently under-valorised or discarded despite their consistent quality. This creates significant food and forces manufacturers to rely entirely on virgin wheat flour, leading to high raw material costs and a large environmental footprint.
The primary challenge of the project was validating whether these surplus streams could be safely and economically reintegrated into the human food chain at an industrial scale.

The feasibility study, conducted in collaboration with primary Italian Corporate, demonstrated significant impact across environmental and economic dimensions:

🌍 Carbon Footprint: An estimated reduction of CO2emissions by 30% to 50% compared to conventional wheat flour.
♻️ Waste Prevention: Avoidance of approximately 18,000 tons of food waste per year by repurposing industrial bakery surplus.
💲 Economic Efficiency: Direct savings on raw material procurement
💰 Financial Viability: Validation of a circular business model with a projected return on investment (ROI) within five years,
🤝 Market Readiness: Strong interest from major players confirms that the solution is scalable and aligns with the demand for resilient, circular ingredients in the European food industry.

What does circular manufacturing look like in aerospace?

Through the INFINITIS project, CONIFY successfully validated a closed-loop, no-refresh reuse workflow for AlSi10Mg powder in metal Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF).

The result?
🔹 8 consecutive LPBF cycles successfully completed
🔹 84.8% reduction in virgin powder consumption
🔹 99.3% reduction in powder waste
🔹 84.8% reduction in virgin-powder material cost
🔹 Up to 66% lower CO₂-equivalent emissions compared with landfilling
🔹 Up to 47% lower CO₂-equivalent emissions compared with recycling
🔹 Up to 97% lower direct energy use compared with landfilling

For aerospace and defence manufacturing, this means 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞, 𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬.

The innovation goes beyond simply reusing powder. CONIFY developed a controlled, traceable and replicable approach that helps SMEs make informed decisions about powder recovery, reuse and recycling.

♻️ BIOREC Transforming Waste into Resources for a Circular Future

What if waste could become the starting point for new opportunities?
BIOREC has carried out the valorisation of two challenging waste streams from landscaping and sports facilities: green waste and end-of-life artificial turf.
Through the project, these waste streams have been explored as valuable resources, opening up new opportunities for more sustainable and circular solutions.
🌱 Green waste was valorised into high-quality biochar for agricultural and landscaping applications.
🏗️ Artificial turf waste was incorporated into innovative construction materials, giving a second life to materials that would otherwise require disposal.
More than developing new solutions, BIOREC has shown the importance of rethinking waste, collaborating with research and technology partners, and creating new pathways for resource recovery.
The project represents an important step towards more sustainable, efficient and circular business models, while demonstrating that environmental challenges can also become opportunities for innovation.

🌱 Making textile dyeing cleaner, safer and more circular
H SAVES H2O, an innovation project addressing one of the textile industry’s key environmental challenges: highly conductive wastewater generated during dyeing processes.

By integrating hydrogen into its CLOSE-N technology, the company CARE Applications has developed a scalable solution that replaces most traditional reducing chemicals while maintaining dyeing quality.
Key results:
✅ 90.5% reduction in wastewater conductivity
✅ Approximately 85% reduction in reducing chemicals
✅ 91% reduction in energy consumption
✅ Potential for direct wastewater reuse
The project has also led to the development of CLOSE-N Combi H, strengthening CARE Applications’ portfolio of circular textile technologies.
H SAVES H2O demonstrates that circularity and industrial competitiveness can go hand in hand, optimising existing machinery while reducing resource consumption and environmental impact.
The next step is to scale the technology from the laboratory to real production conditions and accelerate its adoption across the textile industry.

Behind every successful innovation is a business that sees opportunity where others see waste.

🔧🔩⚙️ For JG Group Sp. z o.o., the challenge was clear: 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 𝐛𝐞 𝐤𝐞𝐩𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞? Many of these tools still contain valuable materials, but returning them for regeneration or recycling wasn't always simple.

With support from the Up2Circ project, JG Group Sp z o.o. developed an innovative vending machine solution that makes returning used cutting tools easy and convenient. Combined with a 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭-𝐚𝐬-𝐚-𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥, customers can rent or purchase the machines while benefiting from a complete tool regeneration process. Every returned tool is inspected - those suitable for reuse are reconditioned, while the rest are responsibly recycled.

The results are already making a difference:
♻️ Around 20% less material consumption
🔧 Approximately 5,000 cutting tools regenerated every month
🌍 Less industrial waste and a stronger circular economy for the CNC manufacturing sector

Belgian company Ramen Dexters is developing plug-and-play window frames that can be fitted at a later stage, reducing the risk of damage during construction.

The system also makes windows easier to remove, replace and reuse – extending their lifespan and supporting a more circular approach to building. ♻️

With support from the Up2Circ programme, the company was able to develop the idea and move it towards practical implementation, prototype testing and certification.
