Osvaldo Salas è uno dei più grandi maestri del fotogiornalismo cubano. Celebre per aver documentato i volti più iconici di Cuba (da Hemingway a Fidel Castro), è poi nel ritratto dei protagonisti anonimi che emerge la capacità dell’artista di trasformare il reportage in poesia visiva.
Il suo stile, formatosi durante gli anni trascorsi a New York e poi riportato nell'isola, fonde il rigore del bianco e nero vintage con una sensibilità profondamente umana. In questo scatto senza titolo degli anni '50, Salas si allontana dalla cronaca politica per catturare un frammento di pura vitalità.

Osvaldo Salas stands as one of the preeminent masters of Cuban photojournalism. Renowned for documenting Cuba's most iconic figures, from Ernest Hemingway to Fidel Castro, it is within his portraits of anonymous subjects that his ability to transform reportage into visual poetry truly emerges.
His style, forged during his years in New York before returning to the island, merges the technical rigor of vintage black-and-white photography with a profoundly human sensibility. In this untitled shot from the 1950s, Salas moves away from political chronicles to capture a fragment of pure vitality.

Per l'artista australiana Leila Jeffreys, ogni uc***lo non è solo un esemplare biologico, ma un individuo dotato di una personalità unica. Cresciuta tra la Papua Nuova Guinea e l'Australia, Jeffreys ha sviluppato fin da bambina un legame empatico con il mondo aviario, lavorando spesso a stretto contatto con scienziati e centri di recupero.

Con il suo ultimo progetto, SEABIRD, l'artista sposta lo sguardo verso le estreme latitudini delle zone polari. Celebrendo l'avifauna delle regioni antartiche e subantartiche, l'artista vuole puntare l’attenzione sul precario equilibrio tra queste specie e l’ambiente estremo in cui vivono.

For Australian artist Leila Jeffreys, each bird is more than just a biological specimen; it is an individual possessed of a unique personality. Growing up between Papua New Guinea and Australia, Jeffreys developed a deep, empathetic bond with the avian world from a young age, often working in close collaboration with scientists and wildlife rescue centers.

With her latest project, SEABIRD, the artist shifts her gaze toward the extreme latitudes of the polar regions. In celebrating the birdlife of the Antarctic and Subantarctic, she aims to draw attention to the precarious balance between these species and the radical environments they inhabit

Giada Ripa, fotografa nata a Londra e cresciuta a Bruxelles, intraprende una spedizione sulle orme del Duca degli Abruzzi, ripercorrendo i sentieri himalayani immortalati da Vittorio Sella all'inizio del Novecento. Tuttavia, il suo lavoro non è una semplice ricostruzione storica.
Lo stile dell'artista si traduce in un "attraversamento contemporaneo" dove il paesaggio non è più una certezza immutabile, ma un’entità instabile.
Davanti al suo obiettivo, i ghiacciai si ritirano e le rocce si sgretolano, rendendo visibile il cambiamento climatico in atto.

Giada Ripa, the London-born and Brussels-raised photographer, embarks on an expedition in the footsteps of the Duke of the Abruzzi, retracing the Himalayan trails immortalized by Vittorio Sella at the dawn of the 20th century. However, her work is far from a mere historical reconstruction.
The artist’s style manifests as a "contemporary traversing," where the landscape is no longer an immutable certainty but an unstable entity. Through her lens, retreating glaciers and crumbling rock formations render the reality of ongoing climate change visible and undeniable.

C’è una forza quasi sospesa in "Ali Jumping" (1966). In questo scatto leggendario, Thomas Hoepker cattura Muhammad Ali mentre sembra saltare da un ponte a Chicago: un’immagine che trascende la cronaca sportiva per diventare il ritratto di un’epoca.

Scomparso recentemente, Thomas Hoepker è stato il primo fotografo tedesco a unirsi a Magnum Photos, di cui è stato anche Presidente. La sua capacità di unire il rigore del fotogiornalismo a una sensibilità estetica raffinata lo ha reso uno dei testimoni più influenti della fine del XX secolo.

There is an almost suspended power in "Ali Jumping" (1966). In this legendary shot, Thomas Hoepker captures Muhammad Ali as he appears to leap from a bridge in Chicago: an image that transcends sports photography to become the definitive portrait of an era.

The late Thomas Hoepker, who passed away recently, was the first German photographer to join Magnum Photos, later serving as its President. His unique ability to merge the rigor of photojournalism with a refined aesthetic sensitivity made him one of the most influential witnesses of the late 20th century.

Secondo Kessels, la fotografia oggi trascende il semplice scatto: la vera sfida risiede nel modo in cui decodifichiamo l’abbondanza di immagini che ci circonda e nell'abilità di narrare le storie che si celano dietro ogni visione.

Può una fotografia diventare uno spazio di guarigione? Per Eugenie Flochel (classe 1996), la risposta risiede nel sottile confine tra immagine e introspezione. Con l'opera "Eudemonia III”, l’artista parigina dalle radici franco-persiane ci invita a una ricerca silenziosa di equilibrio interiore.

Attraverso gesti sottili, texture stratificate e immagini contemplative, l’opera riflette sul rapporto tra vulnerabilità e resilienza, ricordando l'importanza di rallentare e considerare i momenti di quiete come spazi di trasformazione.

Can a photograph become a space for healing? For Eugenie Flochel (b. 1996), the answer lies in the subtle boundary between image and introspection. With the work "Eudemonia III," the Paris-based artist of French-Persian heritage invites us on a silent quest for inner balance.

Through subtle gestures, layered textures, and contemplative imagery, the work reflects on the relationship between vulnerability and resilience, reminding us of the importance of slowing down and embracing moments of stillness as spaces for transformation.

Curated by Denis Curti, this retrospective is a journey into the aesthetics of one of the most daring and refined artists of the 20th century. This 𝐮𝐧𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 explores the formal perfection of the n**e, physical tension, and that "Greek mimesis" that established Mapplethorpe’s visual language as an eternal bridge between classicism and provocation.

Con l'opera "AnneD 96" (2017), Zoe Wiseman ci conduce nel cuore di una sperimentazione visiva che sfida le regole classiche dello sviluppo. Tratta dal suo celebre progetto e volume monografico Sunkissed 85, l'immagine è un saggio magistrale di solarizzazione (o effetto Sabattier), una tecnica che consiste nell'esporre brevemente alla luce la pellicola o la carta durante lo sviluppo, invertendo parzialmente i toni.

Se Man Ray definì ironicamente questi esperimenti come "crimini contro la fotografia", Wiseman accoglie l'accusa con orgoglio: "Allora sono colpevole".

With the work "AnneD 96" (2017), Zoe Wiseman takes us into the heart of a visual experimentation that defies the classical rules of developing. Taken from her acclaimed project and monograph Sunkissed 85, the image is a masterful essay on solarization (or the Sabattier effect), a technique involving the brief exposure of film or paper to light during development, resulting in a partial reversal of tones.

While Man Ray ironically famously dismissed these experiments as "crimes against photography," Wiseman embraces the charge with pride: "Then I am guilty."
