*** Breaking News *** Companies can no longer market their goods using unfounded claims about their environmental impact and durability! 📣

Yesterday the EU Parliament gave its final green light to a directive that will improve product labeling and ban the use of misleading claims.

To achieve this, problematic marketing habits related to greenwashing will be added to the EU list of banned commercial practices:

❌ Generic environmental claims and other misleading product information will be outlawed, such as “environmentally friendly”, “natural”, “biodegradable”, “climate neutral” or “eco” without proof

🏷️ Only sustainability labels based on approved certification schemes or established by public authorities will be allowed in the EU

🌿 Guarantee information has to be more visible and a new guarantee extension label will be introduced to put the durability of goods into focus

Next steps: The directive needs to receive final approval from the Council, after which member states will have 24 months to transpose it into national law.

📣 Important move on : European Parliament introduces climate transition plans and penalties for companies that fail to comply

This voting is connected to the EU Commission’s proposed Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) which promotes sustainable and responsible corporate behavior and puts human rights and environmental considerations at the forefront of companies’ operations and value chains.

*** Which fashion companies are affected? ***

🏭 Companies with 500+ employees & 150€ million in revenue
🏭 Companies with 250+ employees & 40€ million in revenue
🌎 Non-EU companies with EU revenues above these thresholds

*** What is new? ***

The new vote requires companies covered by the directive to implement climate transition plans aligned with the Paris Agreement objective to limit global warming to 1.5°C, encompassing Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.

Companies with more than 1,000 employees will also be required to perform due diligence on climate impacts synched with the Paris Agreement goals and tie performance on the plan’s targets to directors’ variable compensation.

Companies that are failing to comply could face a ban of their products on the market, a fine as high as 5% of the company's global revenue, or if it is a non-EU-company a ban from public procurement in the EU.

Financial service providers such as asset managers and investors will also be included under these regulations, ensuring a wider reach of this sustainable initiative.

*** How can Sustainable Brand Platform help? ***

We are on top of fashion industry legislation and are committed to helping fashion companies implement all existing and new supply chain regulations.

All our solutions are compliant with the existing and upcoming legislation and are created to make the transition to comply with them smooth and easy.

*** News *** EU governments agreed that the bloc should ban the destruction of unsold textiles immediately.

Under the initial March 2022 proposal by the European Commission, the Commission itself was to have determined at a later stage whether to put destruction bans in place.

However, the EU governments agreed on Monday (22nd of May), that a destruction ban on unsold clothing should apply immediately, rather than waiting for the EU executive to carry out an assessment that could have lasted 3 years.

This is part of the EU's green push towards reducing waste through greater reuse and recycling and combating the increase of online sales.

*** How does it affect fashion companies? ***

Medium-sized companies, with fewer than 250 workers, would have a transition period of 4 years, while the smallest companies, with fewer than 50, would be exempt.

The new law would also create a new Digital Product Passport showing a product's environmental sustainability to help consumers make more informed choices.

*** How does Sustainable Brand Platform help? ***

✅ We support fashion brands in their journey towards full data availability and regulatory compliance. For this reason, all our solutions are created in compliance with existing legislation and the ones to come.

🔀 We created a wide range of digital solutions for fashion companies to measure their product's environmental sustainability based on science-based methods, primary data and supply chain collaborations.

📱 We offer a Product ID Card which is seemingly integrated with all our solutions and functions as the new Digital Product Passport required in this new legislation to come.

It’s quickly becoming pivotal for fashion brands to trace and measure ESG performance within their supply chains due to growing consumer expectations and upcoming regulations.

As a sustainable fashion brand, you can and need to be prepared to fully manage your ESG performance and supply chain practices to maintain and improve your sustainability strategy. Accurate supply chain data is gathered through regular supplier audits.

It may sound daunting to collect and implement supplier data on your own. But you’re not alone. We’re going to break down collecting and using metrics to develop a target-focused sustainability strategy.

According to the proposed plan, all textiles sold on the EU market by 2030 must be durable and recyclable.

While "quick fashion" is less expensive, the products are often of lower quality and have a higher environmental impact, so Vivian Loonela.

Textile consumption is the third most negatively affected factor within the European Union, after water and land use, and the fourth most detrimental factor on the environment and climate change at large.

The European Commission is therefore developing a sustainable textile strategy to divert as many items as possible from both store shelves and people's closets into recycling and reuse programs by 2030.
