PPS ACHIEVES TOP GRADE DURING ITS LATEST BRC AUDIT FOR STORAGE AND DISTRIBUTION
The accreditation, which was issued to our Grimsby site on January 24th 2019, has been renewed for a further twelve months and verifies the site’s ability to store, wash, sterlilize and distribute plastic boxes, pallets and bins against the BRC’s Global Standard.

Paul Durrant, Operations Manager at PPS's Grimsby site said the 'AA' grade was recognition of the sustained desire to provide customers with the best service possible, stating; "At PPS we continuously strive to ensure these standards are met as part of our objective to provide an industry leading service for our customers".

Originally introduced in 2006, the BRC Global Standard for Storage and Distribution provides the essential certification link between the range of BRC Global Standards manufacturing Standards and the end user, such as the retailer or the food service company, ensuring customer confidence is upheld through audit and certification.

LEADING RETURNABLE PACKAGING COMPANY PPS GROWS BUSINESS WITH ACQUISITON OF GW CONTAINERS

PPS, a leading supplier of returnable packaging services, is delighted to announce that GW Containers, the UK's specialist in plastic fish boxes and insulated containers, has joined the group.

GW Containers is the sole UK distributor for the market leading Sæplast insulated containers and the RPC Promens fish box range. GW Containers in partnership with Sæplast and RPC Promens is the UK's leading supplier to the fishing industry and animal by-products industry in addition to supplying preferred products in meat, vegetables, battery recycling, waste and food processing.

The acquisition will enable PPS to expand and enhance its current services to ensure customers have access to an even larger range of packaging solutions. Currently PPS offers the delivery, collection, asset tracking, washing, rental and repair of returnable equipment. The group also offers the sale of a wide range of returnable packaging via Alison Handling, the UK’s largest independent stockist, who joined the group 18 months ago.

PPS has enjoyed continued growth in its 15 year history, and now employs more than 150 people across its sites in the Midlands, Grimsby and Kirkham. The company provides cost effective and environmentally friendly returnable plastic packaging solutions across the UK, Europe and Iceland. PPS moves 25 million boxes a year for customers including retailers, food processors and the automotive industry.

David Peggie, CEO of PPS, said: “We’ve admired the services and reputation of GW Containers for many years and we are proud to be able to take on the exceptional services and impressive customer base. We are also delighted that both Graham and Gregg Witherington will remain with the company in their current roles to continue the further development of the business under the PPS banner”

Graham Witherington of GW Containers said: “We’ve known of PPS for many years due to the complementary services they offered to our own. Their reputation is second to none and we couldn’t think of a better partner to take the business forward.”

AWARD WINNING PACKAGING FROM PPS

The additional day in February proved to be one for celebration at PPS with the announcement of this years EcoPack Challenge. The returnable packaging service provider wowed the judges at the recent competition and were delighted to be awarded the winners. The UK’s only show dedicate to sustainable packaging solutions, EcoPack encompasses eco-friendly inventions during the Packaging Innovation exhibition.
The competition provides developers the opportunity to showcase their packaging ideas to professionals and exhibition attendees. PPS entered the Re-Fresh box into the competition to highlight the alternatives available to single trip packaging such as cardboard and polystyrene. PPS have supplied reusable packaging services across a number of industries including food, fish and retail for many years and saw a gap in the market following customer feedback for a small RTP container solution. Not only that, the reusable container is a first of its kind with a leak proof lid and two size options having matching footprints for maximising stack and nesting requirements. Designed to be reused within the supply chain over a 10 year cycle, the units are manufactured from Food Grade High Impact Copolymer Polypropylene.
This years judges for the annual competition were Laura Fernandez, Packaging Technologist from Marks & Spencer, Jonathan Couper, Packaging Development Manager from 2 Sisters Food Group and Mark Shayler, Sustainable Design Consultant, Lecturer in the Circular Economy and Design, Royal College of Art. The four shortlisted products were presented in a Dragons Den meets packaging format to a packed floor at the EcoPack Theatre on Wednesday 24th February.

“The initial reception from the judges was positive and the visitors to the presentation theatre were very engaged” commented Andrew Lee, PPS Sales Manager. “As well as showcasing the product design it was also a great opportunity to highlight the rental and pooling solutions available and the commitment from PPS with the installation of a purpose built wash line.”

Managing Director Joanne Moss was also in attendance and joined the presentation for judge’s questions. “They were keen to understand how we would monitor loss and controls. PPS having already supplied Returnable Packaging Solutions for many years, we operate an online management portal which holds each point of the supply chain responsible for the units they have received. During the presentation Andrew highlighted how the unit would reduce CO2 within the supply chain, the judges wanted to see evidence of this. Whilst we haven’t yet conducted the study on the Re-Fresh box, previous evidence from our 15kg reusable fish tray shows switching from polystyrene can reduce CO2 by up to 89%, of which we would expect the results to be similar,” commented Joanne.

PPS will now develop the Re-Fresh box directly with Mark and Spencer and are looking forward to the next stages of trials and processing.
