UNESCO has officially launched a major new project to revitalize the Erbil Citadel, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited sites and a powerful symbol of Iraq’s rich cultural heritage.
This initiative marks a new phase in ongoing efforts to preserve and enhance the Citadel’s historical, cultural, and social significance. The project is implemented by UNESCO in partnership with the High Commission for Erbil Citadel Revitalization (HCECR) and funded by Kar New Ventures Limited.
Beyond safeguarding the Citadel’s physical fabric, the project aims to restore its role as a vibrant living heritage site, one that actively connects communities, history, and identity. Preparatory work is already underway, bringing together national institutions, international experts, and local communities to ensure that the revitalization process is inclusive, sustainable, and rooted in local ownership.
A key focus for the initiative is capacity-building and skills development, creating opportunities for young people and local professionals to engage directly in the preservation of their cultural heritage.
In parallel, the initiative will foster public engagement through cultural activities and enhanced visitor experiences, helping to reconnect people with the Citadel as a place of memory, dialogue, and cultural exchange.
As a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Erbil Citadel stands as a testament to thousands of years of human settlement and resilience. Through this new project, UNESCO reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding Iraq’s cultural heritage while supporting communities in building a shared and sustainable future.
