Shri Vishwanath Mandir's construction took thirty-five years to complete (1931-1966). The temple is one of the tallest in India. The total height of the temple is 77 meters (253 feet). Temple's design was inspired by Shri Kashi Vishwanath Mandir and is made mostly of marble.

भारत की धार्मिक और सांस्कृतिक राजधानी वाराणसी से कई सारी कहानियां जुड़ी हुई हैं। उत्तरप्रदेश राज्य में बसा प्रसिद्ध शहर हिन्दू धर्म का सबसे पवित्र और पूज्यनीय स्थल है, जिसे अविमुक्त क्षेत्र भी कहा जाता है। हिन्दू धर्म के साथ-साथ यह बौद्ध और जैन धर्म का भी पवित्र स्थल है जिसकी खूबसूरती शाम होते ही गंगा घाट पर नज़र आती है। वाराणसी का नाम दो नदियों वरुणा और असी के संगम पर पड़ा है।

वाराणसी जिसे बनारस और काशी के नाम से भी जाना जाता है, की संस्कृति का गंगा नदी और इसके धार्मिक महत्व से एक अटूट और अहम रिश्ता है। वाराणसी से कई प्राचीन से प्राचीन कहानियां जुड़ी हुई हैं। प्रसिद्ध अमरीकी लेखक मार्क ट्वेन ने तो वाराणसी के लिए यह भी लिखा है कि, "बनारस इतिहास से भी पुरातन है, परंपराओं से पुराना है, किंवदंतियों (लीजेन्ड्स) से भी प्राचीन है और जब इन सबको एकत्र कर दें, तो उस संग्रह से भी दोगुना प्राचीन है।"

वाराणसी एक ऐसा शहर है जहाँ आपको असंख्य संख्याओं में मंदिर देखने को मिलेंगे जो शैव और वैष्णव धर्म को समर्पित हैं। ये दोनों ही धर्म हिन्दू धर्म के ही रूप हैं जो सद्भाव से यहाँ मौजूद हैं। यह जैन धर्म का भी एक प्रमुख केंद्र है क्यूंकि 23 वें तीर्थंकार पार्श्वनाथ का जन्म यहीं हुआ था।

ऐसा माना जाता है कि जब पृथ्वी का निर्माण हुआ तब रौशनी की सबसे पहली किरण काशी में ही पड़ी। जैसा की कहा जाता है कि भगवान शिव जी काशी के परमात्मा हैं, इसलिए इस वजह से अन्य ग्रह भी अपनी मर्ज़ी से यहाँ पर कुछ नहीं कर सकते थे जब तक कि शिव जी का आदेश न हो। ऐसा माना जाता है कि शनि देवता जब भगवान शिव जी की खोज में काशी आए तब वे उनके मंदिर में लगभग साढ़े सात सालों तक प्रवेश नहीं कर पाए। आप जब भी कभी काशी के विश्वनाथ मंदिर में जायेंगे, मंदिर के बाहर ही आपको शनि देव जी का मंदिर दिखेगा।
