A great article today in Business Standard by TB on the growing need for banks to boost deposit growth.

1. Credit Deposit Ratio (CD ratio) is getting on the higher side as credit growth is outpacing deposits.

2. When Deposit Growth is slow, banks resort to raising money from the market in the form commercial papers and certificate of deposits - CP/CD’s. However this form of raising money increases the bank’s cost of capital. Moreover the money raised is for a short tenure.

3. A way out this is to slow the pace of credit growth which would be detrimental to the country’s economic growth. Another way used by banks to garner more deposits is to offer higher rate of interest but that again impacts banks profitability by denting NII and NIMs.

4. There has to be a focused effort to grow India’s corporate bond market to ensure easy access to funds at reasonable cost. Inclusive growth is the solution to this problem.
