Red day for Indian markets as Sensex and Nifty closed lower, but Bank Nifty bucked the trend on crude oil optimism. Here is what moved, what led, and what to watch next.

Picture the Indian market in the 1990s: you buy a stock on Monday like everyone else, but nobody actually settles up, not yet. Instead, every trade made through the week is swept into one pile and cleared together on a single appointed day the following week. That was the account-period system. And it carried a simple flaw.

By bunching a whole week of buying and selling into one settlement, the market built itself a weekly pressure point. If one large player couldn’t pay or couldn’t deliver on that day, the failure didn’t stay contained. It rippled. Delivery turned messy, trust frayed, and defaults became a structural risk, not just a possibility.Β

The fix was almost philosophical in its simplicity - stop waiting for the week and settle each day’s trades on their own. That is rolling settlement.

It arrived in stages. A pilot of just 10 stocks in January 2000, a major expansion through 2001 and by December of the same year, every listed stock had moved across. Each trading day now stood on its own - a clean slate, cleared in five working days, then three, then two.

What changed was not only speed, but structure. The pile never grew large enough to turn impossible and counterparty risk shrank from a week down to a couple of days. The market kept tightening the screw. By 2003, settlement was down to two days. By 2023, just one, placing India among the first major economies in the world to get there.

This kind of stuff rarely makes headlines. But the next time your shares appear in your account the day after you buy them, that is two decades of quiet reform doing its job.

Viral Gupta shares a simple experience from his work-from-home days. His laptop would repeatedly heat up, and every visit to the repair guy came with a different solution. But when a friend suggested looking at where he was working, everything changed.

A simple change in his setup solved what repeated repairs couldn't.

The same principle can apply to our careers. Instead of constantly fixing one problem after another, sometimes we need to step back, identify the root cause, and solve the reason behind the problem.

That's one of the things Viral experienced after joining Jainam β€” looking beyond the immediate problem and finding the reason behind it.

Sometimes, the best solution isn't fixing the problem. It's understanding why the problem exists in the first place.
