Singrauli is the 50th district of Madhya Pradesh state, carved out of Sidhi district on 24 May 2008, comprising the eastern part of Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas of Sonibhadra district of Uttar Pradesh. In ancient times this area was covered with dense forests and inaccessible areas. Due to the abundance of mineral resources and thermal power plants, it has been given the name Urjanchal. Singrauli district is a repository of natural, historical and cultural resources. It is a district of the Baghelkhand region and is an industrial hub having six major thermal power plants located near Singrauli and in its neighborhood along with the second-largest series of eleven active coal mine groups in Asia. Other key industrial setups in the Singrauli region are Aluminium Smelter, Agro-based industries, Chemical plants, Explosive manufacturing, Ready-made garments & embroidery, Wood/wooden-based furniture, Rubber, and Plastic & petro based, Engineering units, Electrical machinery, and transport equipment, Repairing & servicing etc. The potential new MSMSs include Cement Plant, Sand production &other silica-based products from overburdened material of coal mines, Agricultural machinery, Irrigation and Dust suppression solutions, Welding Electrodes and manipulators, Flour Mills, Corn Flakes, Aluminum products etc. The potential new areas for the service industry are Service Centre, Engg. Workshop, Tourism and Printing Units etc. Singrauli is also marked by the largest water reservoir in Rihand.
