How Game-Recharge and Skin Scams Work

In typical game-recharge scams, fraudsters lure users with "cheap skins" or "free coins" on social media. They demand payment via UPI, Paytm, or crypto, then vanish. Sometimes, they trick victims into sharing One-Time Passwords (OTPs) or installing remote-access apps, which drain bank balances or gaming wallets.

Skin-selling scams on Instagram or WhatsApp mimic legitimate traders. Scammers post screenshots of rare skins, share fake trade-history videos, and request advance payments or "security deposits." After payment, they block the victim or claim the skin was "confiscated" by the game server. As we know, large numbers of people are following cultural and traditional approaches, when it comes to dating and marriage in India. So, Crypto scams on matrimonial or dating app have become increasingly prevalent in recent times. As per the cases reported to the ODFC Helpdesk, many people become victims of crypto trading and investment scams run by gangs using matrimonial websites, a few unknown apps and WhatsApp chat etc.

The Modus Operandi of such scams typically involves:

— Scammer creating fake profiles on matrimonial platforms

— Building trust with victims through extended online communication.

— Convincing victims to invest in cryptocurrency trading platforms

— Gradually extracting large sums of money through fabricated investment schemes

2. A 30-year-old man lost ₹17 lakh after being convinced to invest in a dubious cryptocurrency trading software by a woman he met online.

3. A man was duped of 44,000 USDT after meeting a woman on a matrimonial site who promised high investment returns.

1️⃣ Proofs Collection and Documentation:

Collect and preserve evidence, including screenshots, chats and records with timestamps of the incident. You may take the help from the ODFC Cybercrime Helpdesk* to complete your case documentation.

2️⃣ National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal:

Register on the portal (cybercrime.gov.in) using your mobile number and follow the prompts to submit your complaint.

3️⃣ Contact Cybercell / Police Station:

After filing a complaint, it will be shortly forwarded to your nearest police station. If needed, you can visit your local police station or cybercell. If your case requires representation, it is better to hire a lawyer(s). The ODFC community offers you facilities to hire expert lawyers quickly in 750+ districts across the country.

4️⃣ Stay cooperative:

Ensure all details are accurate, including personal identification and specific incident information. You may be asked to provide additional information or proof by experts and the investigating team. Remember to stay calm, cooperative, and transparent throughout the process.
