A new study from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) revealed that 71% of individual intraday equity cash market traders lost money in the fiscal year 2023.
The situation was even worse for those who traded very frequently, with 80% of these high-frequency traders (over 500 trades per year) ending up in the red.
Young traders aged below 30 years also faced significant losses, with 76% of them losing money. Despite the high risk, the number of intraday traders in the equity cash segment saw a massive increase of over 300% in FY23 compared to FY19. In fact, one in three equity cash markettraders traded intraday.
The share of young traders also grew dramatically from 18% in FY19 to 48% in FY23. However, the study found that those who lost money tended to trade more frequently than those who made a profit.
The research is based on a sample of individual clients from the top 10 stock brokers, which account for around 86% of the individual client count in the equity cash segment during FY23.
