UPI Limit Is Now ₹5 Lakh
The headline “UPI limit is now ₹5 lakh” does not tell the full story.
The standard limit for ordinary UPI payments and person-to-person transfers generally remains ₹1 lakh.
The higher ₹5 lakh limit applies only to selected categories of payments made to eligible and verified merchants.
These can include hospital and education payments, taxes, insurance, capital-market transactions, travel, credit-card bills, and certain other approved merchant payments.
Even then, ₹5 lakh is a maximum permitted ceiling. Your bank, UPI app, or payment provider may set a lower limit.
Also, the ₹5 lakh rule for eligible one-time payments should not be confused with UPI AutoPay. Recurring payments follow separate rules and limits.
The bigger change is that UPI is no longer being designed only for everyday purchases. It is gradually becoming a payment option for much larger and more financially important transactions as well.
