In 2009, former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli’s election affidavit declared assets of about Rs.1.97 crore - around Rs.1.93 crore of it being his Bandra flat - against liabilities of about Rs.57.21 lakh.
More than a decade later, in 2022, Kambli said that his Rs.30,000 monthly BCCI pension was his only source of income at that time.
In 2025, Sunil Gavaskar’s foundation reportedly stepped in with Rs.30,000 monthly assistance along with medical support.
And today, at 54, Kambli is reportedly undergoing treatment while staying at an elderly-care centre.
But this post is NOT about judging Kambli.
We don't know his complete financial story.
We don't know what happened to his money, what expenses he faced, what assets changed over the years, or what financial decisions were made.
So I'm not going to speculate.
But his publicly documented journey raises a very important question for every person who earns well:
# # # What happens to your financial life when your income stops?
Because there is a dangerous difference between:
HIGH INCOME ≠ WEALTH
BIG HOUSE ≠ FINANCIAL SECURITY
HIGH NET WORTH ≠ LIQUIDITY
A SUCCESSFUL CAREER ≠ PERMANENT INCOME
CRORE-RUPEE ASSETS ≠ FINANCIAL FREEDOM
Your salary can stop.
Your business can slow down.
Your career can end.
Your health can change.
Your ability to earn can disappear much earlier than you expected.
And that's why I believe one of the most important financial questions is not:
“How much do you earn?”
It is:
“If my income became ZERO tomorrow, how long could my wealth keep my family financially secure?”
12 months?
3 years?
10 years?
Or indefinitely?
During your best earning years, don't just build a bigger lifestyle.
Build financial resilience.
Build enough:
→ Emergency liquidity
→ Protection against major risks
→ Debt control
→ Long-term investments
→ Income-producing assets
→ Multiple sources of cash flow
→ A financial system that doesn't depend entirely on your ability to work
Because your income is your engine.
But your wealth should eventually become your backup engine.
The real test of wealth isn't how rich you look when you're earning your best.
It's how financially secure you remain when you can no longer earn the way you used to.
That's the difference between earning money and building wealth.
Ask yourself today:
“If my income stopped tomorrow, would my wealth continue paying my bills?”
That answer may tell you more about your financial health than your salary ever will.
(Liquidity)
