WHO WE ARE

We are India's apex development financial institution, formed by an Act of Parliament in 1982. We are owned by the Government of India (GoI) and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Our mandate is bringing rural prosperity through credit and non-credit initiatives in the fields of agriculture, cottage & village industries, handicrafts & small scale industries. From being a pure refinance p

rovider in 1982 to India’s apex level development financial institution in 2017, we today directly and indirectly touch lives of millions in rural India. We have traversed a long journey and are today engaged with various facets of nation building. OUR STRUCTURE

Our Head Office is located in Mumbai and we have a pan-India presence with 31 Regional Offices. We have a phenomenal district-level outreach with more than 423 District Development Managers engaged in rural development at the district level. Our training establishments are situated at Bolpur, Lucknow and Mangalore, serving the capacity building requirements of rural financial institutions across the country and Asia Pacific countries, besides our own staff. OUR FUNCTIONS

Our initiatives are aimed at building an empowered and financially inclusive rural India through specific goal-oriented departments which can be categorized broadly into three heads: Financial, Developmental and Supervision, touching almost every aspect of rural economy. From providing refinance support to building rural infrastructure, from preparing district level credit plans to guiding and motivating the banking industry in achieving these targets, from supervising Cooperative Banks and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) to helping them develop sound banking practices and onboarding them to the CBS platform, from designing new development schemes to the implementation of GoI’s development schemes, from training handicraft artisans to providing them a marketing platform for selling these articles, we touch millions of rural lives across the country.

Behind NABARD’s developmental initiatives at the grassroots are dedicated officers working closely with rural communities, institutions, banks, and local stakeholders across the country.

These are the District Development Managers (DDMs), who play a key role in overseeing developmental initiatives, strengthening institutional coordination, and enabling effective implementation of the initiatives at the district level. As NABARD’s representatives on the ground, DDMs help bridge policy with implementation and contribute to inclusive rural transformation.

Designed to serve clusters of villages, RSVCs help in bridging critical gaps in rural ecosystems. Strengthening this vision further, NABARD, in collaboration with the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, has established a National Centre of Excellence on RSVCs.

Today, RSVCs represent a step towards building resilient rural ecosystems where technology becomes an enabler of livelihoods, enterprises, and inclusive sustainable development. Swipe through to discover how RSVCs are enabling technology-led transformation across rural India.

The future of rural development lies in leveraging technology to build resilient, inclusive, and future-ready ecosystems, where innovation bridges gaps in access, productivity, and opportunities.

Recognising this, NABARD is driving a calibrated shift by enabling digital integration across value chains, supporting tech-led innovations, and strengthening access to finance for rural enterprises and communities.

Through these interventions, it continues to foster an ecosystem where knowledge, institutions, and technology work in convergence to unlock sustainable growth.

Reflecting this vision, Dr Shaji K.V., Chairman, NABARD, has consistently highlighted the importance of bringing together knowledge, technology, and finance as a unified force to strengthen rural economies and empower communities at the grassroots.

For several years, Mizoram had depended on external sources to meet its power requirements due to the gap between the state’s increasing electricity demand and local generation capacity.

To address this challenge, the Power and Electricity Department, Government of Mizoram, with support from NABARD under RIDF XXVIII, has facilitated the development of a 10 MW solar power project at Thenzawl. The initiative aims to strengthen the state’s renewable energy infrastructure while enhancing long-term energy security.

Singpho Phalap, the distinctively smoky-flavoured tea from Arunachal Pradesh, represents a rich legacy of indigenous knowledge and cultural heritage.

Handcrafted by the Singpho community using traditional fermentation and sun-drying techniques, this unique tea reflects centuries-old craftsmanship passed down through generations.

Recognising its cultural and economic significance, NABARD facilitated the GI registration process for Singpho Phalap, helping secure its identity and authenticity. The GI tag preserves this traditional tea-making practice and creates sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities by enhancing its visibility in domestic and global markets.
