Good Morning Money!

*Q.* I have heard that SEBI has changed some rules regarding how mutual funds should function. What is that change exactly and do I have any reason to worry?

*A.* Long back here we discussed about different types of mutual fund schemes. One such type is Multicap Funds. These funds, as the name suggests, can invest into stocks of multiple sizes - large cap, mid cap or small cap.

There was no restriction about how much of portfolio can go into what type of stocks. Only restriction was that minimum 65% of the total portfolio should get invested into equity. Within that 65%, it was fund manager's discretion to decide which stocks to buy of what size (cap). This is not going to remain the same anymore.

SEBI has now directed MultiCap fund managers to invest minimum 25% of portfolio each into different size (cap) of stocks. That means 75% of the total portfolio will now compulsorily go into equity (and within that minimum 25% each into large, mid and small cap stocks).

You need not worry. Let your fund manager decide which course of action to take. This is not going to happen immediately. This change is supposed to get completed by 31st Jan, 2021.

In a move to curb widespread tax evasion, the Government of India has proposed to widen the scope and reduced the threshold of various transactions to further include even white good purchases, property tax payment, medical and life insurance premium and even hotel payments.
